Is it just me, or does the very idea of a prequel to a saga that already starts with the protagonist's birth feel unnecessary? We see Harry from age 5 in 'Only Time Will Tell'. What more backstory do we need? Archer wisely started a new story instead of trying to mine the past of characters whose origins were already clearly explained. The 'prequel' label is a persistent bit of misinformation that needs to die.

From a pure timeline perspective, the Clifton Chronicles begins in 1920 and runs through to around 1992. 'Nothing Ventured' starts in the 1980s. So if you were to place it within the Clifton timeline, it would actually overlap with the later Clifton books, not precede them. William Warwick is doing his thing in London while Harry Clifton is dealing with his later-life crises. But they never cross over, so it's a pointless exercise. Just enjoy them as parallel series in Archer's fictional version of Britain.

I made this mistake! I bought 'Nothing Ventured' thinking it was the start, read it, and kept waiting for young Harry Clifton to appear. When I realized my error, I had to mentally reset for 'Only Time Will Tell'. It was a bit jarring. They're both good, but they're not the same family saga. So my two cents: don't do what I did. The Clifton Chronicles is a self-contained epic. The so-called prequel is a marketing mix-up that doesn't help new readers.
