What Is The Correct Order Of Linwood Barclay’S Promise Falls Series?

Just got into Barclay's thriller books and spoilers are everywhere! My first was The Twenty-Three, but now I'm totally lost on the Promise Falls timeline. Anyone have a full reading list?

Just finished reading them and I have to say, the order matters less than some people think? They're all self-contained mysteries within the same town. You'll get a better sense of the town's decay and some recurring character arcs in order, but the major whodunits are separate. That said, the publication order is the intended flow. 'Broken Promise' first, obviously, then 'Far From True', 'The Twenty-Three'. The third book does tie up some lingering town-wide threads, so it's nice to have the background.

Hmm, I've only read the first one, 'Broken Promise'. I should probably get around to the other two. Are 'Far From True' and 'The Twenty-Three' just as good? The first one was a solid page-turner.

Honestly, I read 'The Twenty-Three' first by accident because I grabbed it from a library sale. It was confusing as hell, not gonna lie. I spent half the book trying to piece together who was who and what the heck happened at the drive-in. Went back and read 'Broken Promise' and it all clicked. So yeah, publication order is the way to go. Don't be like me. The series builds on this atmosphere of collective trauma in the town, and you need that foundation.

The order is: Broken Promise (2015), Far From True (2016), The Twenty-Three (2016). It's a tight little trilogy. Each book features a different shocking event in the town, but they're all investigated by the same weary detectives. You get to know the detectives and their lives better if you read in order. Also, the town's infrastructure issues become a bigger plot point as you go along.

Broken Promise, Far From True, The Twenty-Three. That's the order. They're all thrillers set in the same doomed town. I found the character of Cal Weaver more prominent in the first book, but Detective Barry Duckworth is the consistent thread throughout. Reading them in order shows his increasing frustration and determination. It's a great series for fans of small-town crime with multiple intersecting stories.

I tried to find a reading order online and got conflicting info because Barclay has other books set in Promise Falls but not part of this core mystery. 'Never Saw It Coming' and 'Clouded Vision' are standalone thrillers in the same town, apparently. For the series series, though, it's the three-book arc plus the novella. The standalones are optional extras for the location, not the plot.

Is there a cameo from Zack Walker in the later books? I don't think so. They seem like completely separate universes. One is almost a parody of suburban anxiety, the other is the real, brutal thing. Mixing them would be tonally weird. So no need to read one series to understand the other.
