What Is The Correct Order Of Michael Connelly'S Lincoln Lawyer Books?

Lincoln Lawyer fan here: help me sort out Mickey Haller's timeline before my next binge. I'm mixing up the sequel order versus the release dates. Where does "The Law of Innocence" actually fit in the series reading list?

The first book is a perfect standalone. If you're not sure you'll like the series, just read 'The Lincoln Lawyer'. If you love it, you have six more (and counting) to enjoy in order. If it's not your thing, you've still read a fantastic, self-contained legal thriller that won best novel awards for a reason. It's the ideal entry point.

The Netflix show has definitely sparked this question again. New fans of the show want the book order, which is awesome. My advice: the show is adapting books out of sequence, so don't use it as a guide. Use the book list everyone's posting. The showrunners are rearranging things to fit a TV format, but the books have their own internal logic.

It's more than just a list; it's about the character's journey. Starting with 'The Lincoln Lawyer', you meet a cynical defense attorney working out of his car. By 'The Law of Innocence', he's defending himself, and in 'Resurrection Walk', he's grappling with the moral weight of his wins. Reading them out of sequence would rob you of that arc. You wouldn't understand his changing relationship with his ex-wives, his driver Earl, or his half-brother Harry Bosch if you jumped around. The order matters because Mickey Haller changes, deeply, and each case leaves a mark on him.

I once made the mistake of reading a plot summary for 'The Gods of Guilt' before reading the book. It spoiled a major emotional beat. That's why, beyond just order, I recommend going in completely blind for each one. Don't even read the blurbs too closely. Let Connelly unfold the story at his own masterful pace. The order ensures you get each revelation at the right time.

This is one of those series where publication order is absolutely the way to go. Connelly's universe is so interconnected that reading in chronological order of events can get messy for a first-timer. Just grab them as they came out: 'The Lincoln Lawyer' (2005), 'The Brass Verdict' (2008), 'The Reversal' (2010), 'The Fifth Witness' (2011), 'The Gods of Guilt' (2013), 'The Law of Innocence' (2020), and 'Resurrection Walk' (2023). You'll appreciate the cameos from Harry Bosch and the way the legal landscape changes more if you experience it the way readers did. Trust me, trying to splice in the Bosch books from the timeline is a project for a second read-through.

What is the correct reading order for Michael Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer books?

Publication order is the safest bet, but I'll be honest, I read 'The Brass Verdict' first and was totally fine. The books are written to be accessible. That said, you'll get more out of the later books, especially the ones with Harry Bosch, if you start at the beginning with Mickey. Seeing how his relationship with his ex-wife and daughter evolves is a big part of the series' heart.

The audiobook versions are a whole vibe. Peter Giles's narration is so laid-back and confident, perfect for Haller's character. I listened to them all on my commute over a few months, in order. It felt like following a long, addictive podcast series. The consistency of the voice from one book to the next really glued the experience together. Highly recommend that format if you're an audio person.

A friend told me to read the Bosch series first, which I did, and then jumping into 'The Lincoln Lawyer' felt like meeting an old friend's rival. It adds a layer of dramatic irony because you know Harry's side of things. If you have the time, starting with the early Bosch novels like 'The Black Echo' gives you a richer sense of the LA Connelly is building. Then when Mickey rolls in, you understand the ecosystem he's operating in, cops and all.

Mickey's Lincoln is practically a character. In the first book, it's his mobile office. By the later books, it's a relic, a symbol of his past. The order of the series traces the life cycle of that car, which is a weirdly poignant through-line.

How do the Lincoln Lawyer books fit into Michael Connelly’s series order?

I love a good flowchart, and the Connelly-verse has a great one. The Lincoln Lawyer series is a thick, central line that occasionally merges with the Bosch line. There are even lines for the Terry McCaleb and Renée Ballard series that intersect with both. Following the flowchart is like following the history of a complex family. It's satisfying in a completist way. But if flowcharts give you anxiety, just remember: Mickey Haller's story is in these six books. Read those. If you fall in love with the world, the flowchart will be a welcome guide for where to go next, not homework.

Connelly's writing is so procedural. You learn how a defense attorney builds a case, finds investigators, negotiates with prosecutors. Reading sequentially, you see Mickey refine his techniques, learn from past failures, and develop his own code of ethics. It's a masterclass in character through profession.

Oh, I'm just browsing this thread. I've been meaning to try a legal thriller series. Taking notes on the order here. Sounds like it's pretty straightforward, which is a relief. Some series have insanely complicated reading orders.
