It's about inheriting a mindset. All Might's training wasn't just about muscle; it was about cultivating a spirit. 'Eat this' was a literal and metaphorical transfer. In volume 2, Deku is digesting that metaphor. He's evolving from someone who wanted to be like All Might to someone who has to be the next All Might. The weight of that evolution is his real training. Every moment is a test of whether he has the heart to shoulder that symbol. The physical quirks are almost secondary to that psychological boot camp.

The evolution is in his tactical thinking, even if it's basic. Facing Bakugo, he doesn't just charge; he analyzes the explosions and tries to find an opening. It fails miserably, but the instinct is there. He's moving from a purely reactive state to a slightly more analytical one mid-conflict. This is the seed of his future strategic brilliance. The training is his brain adapting to crisis mode, forcing his analytical skills to work in real-time under adrenaline and fear.

Wait, I'm drawing a blank on specific volume 2 training sequences. Wasn't the entrance exam and the first battle trial in volume 3? My memory's fuzzy on the exact chapter breaks. I feel like the early stuff blurs together a bit.

The evolution is narrative, not physical. Horikoshi is putting him through the wringer to make his eventual breakthroughs satisfying. In volume 2, he's at his lowest point of control. There's nowhere to go but up. So the 'evolution' is the establishment of the rock-bottom baseline. Every tiny improvement from this point forward will feel earned because we've seen the absolute chaos and self-destruction that is his starting line. It's less about showing progress and more about making the audience understand the monumental scale of the challenge.

Honestly, it's all setup. The real 'evolution' in training kicks off when Gran Torino enters the picture way later. Volume 2 is him fumbling in the dark, which is necessary narratively but not exactly a showcase of progressive overload. He's learning what the problem is, not yet learning how to solve it. The evolution is in the definition of his challenge: 'I have this power that breaks me. I need to find a way to use it without breaking.' That's the core thesis statement for his entire character arc, and volume 2 is where that thesis gets written in broken bones.

Deku's quirk evolution in 'My Hero Academia' is one of the most compelling arcs in the series. Initially, he inherits 'One For All' from All Might, but his body can't handle its raw power, leading to self-inflicted injuries. Over time, he learns to distribute the quirk's energy through 'Full Cowling,' channeling it evenly across his body instead of focusing it in single limbs. This breakthrough transforms his combat style from reckless to strategic.
Later, the manga reveals deeper layers of 'One For All,' including vestiges of past users and hidden quirks. Deku unlocks abilities like 'Blackwhip,' 'Float,' and 'Danger Sense,' each tied to a previous wielder. The emotional weight of these discoveries is huge—Deku isn’t just mastering a power; he’s connecting with a legacy. The way Horikoshi ties quirk evolution to character growth is masterful, making every new ability feel earned.
