The Phryne Fisher series by Kerry Greenwood is pure, delightful fun. Set in 1920s Melbourne, Phryne is a wealthy, glamorous, and fiercely independent socialite who solves crimes for amusement and justice. She’s bold, sexually liberated, and always impeccably dressed. The mysteries are clever cozies, but the real joy is Phryne herself and the vivid Jazz Age setting. The TV adaptation is also wonderful. These books are the definition of a feel-good, clever mystery with a fantastic female lead who faces no systemic sexism—she simply breezes past it with charm and intelligence.

I have a soft spot for the 'cat detective' sub-genre, but my favorite is the 'Mrs. Murphy' series by Rita Mae Brown and her cat, Sneaky Pie Brown. The human lead is postmistress Mary Minor 'Harry' Haristeen, but her pets, the tiger cat Mrs. Murphy and corgi Tee Tucker, solve the crimes and try to clue Harry in. It’s deeply cozy, set in rural Virginia, and full of small-town charm and animal antics. The mysteries are decent, but the appeal is 100% in the quirky characters and the animal POV chapters.

What about a heist where the planner is the genius? 'The Jackaby' series by William Ritter is supernatural historical mystery with a male lead, but for a pure heist, movies like 'Ocean’s 8' come to mind. In books, 'The Palace of Thieves' by Jane Smiley isn’t a heist, but for clever female-driven criminal plots, maybe 'The Widows of Malabar Hill' by Sujata Massey, where a female lawyer in 1920s Bombay investigates a murder tied to a wealthy Muslim household. The detective work is legal and cultural. Perveen Mistry is a wonderful, pioneering protagonist.

The Cat Who… series by Lilian Jackson Braun is the ultimate cozy mystery series for cat lovers. The lead is journalist Jim Qwilleran, but the real detectives are his two brilliant Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum, who give him psychic clues. While the human lead is male, the series has a massive female readership and is a cornerstone of the cozy genre. It’s gentle, funny, and utterly charming. The crimes are almost incidental to the small-town life and the antics of the cats. It’s pure comfort reading.

C.J. Tudor’s thrillers often have female protagonists facing supernatural-tinged mysteries from their past. In 'The Burning Girls', a vicar moves to a new parish with her daughter and uncovers a dark history linked to old martyrs and disappearances. She’s investigating both as a spiritual guide and a protector of her child. Tudor writes creepy, atmospheric thrillers with a Stephen King-like feel. The female leads are typically resilient and pragmatic, digging into small-town horrors.

I'm just here to see if anyone mentions Vera Stanhope from Ann Cleeves' books. She's a personal favorite—older, unconventional, sharp as a tack, and kind of brilliant at reading people. The TV show is great, but the books give you so much more of her internal world. She's not glamorous; she's deeply human and sometimes difficult. The cases, set in Northumberland, are always wrapped up in the tight-knit communities there. Cleeves is a master of the slow reveal, where the environment feels like a character itself.

Hmm. I feel like I'm forgetting a major one that just won a bunch of awards. Something about a cold case in Iceland? The name is on the tip of my tongue... might come back to edit if I remember. Anyway, lots of great stuff listed here already.
