Who the hell was that? I shook my head and went back to searching. I didn't have time for mysterious women with probably glowing tattoos. Hours passed. My eyes burned from reading by candlelight, but I kept going. Most of the books were about pack laws and territory disputes. Nothing helpful. But then my fingers found something different. A thin book wedged between two larger ones.

None of them look at me like I’m some misplaced extra who wandered into their story. If I’m new here, if I wasn’t written into their lives until now, shouldn’t someone notice? After the first three periods, I locate the library, not exactly sure of what I'm looking for. It looks like something made from a book. Well this is a book. Rows of shelves holding up books — history, mythology, and school records stacked behind glass cabinets. My heartbeat quickens. I open the cabinet and withdraw the student's yearbook. The smell of old books linger in the air as I open the yearbook.

I pulled Fifty Shades of Grey first (cliché, yes, but I needed an entry point), then The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by Anne Rice, Story of O, a slim volume called The New Topping Book just to balance it out, and two anthologies with titles like Bound Hearts and Surrender to Me. The stack felt heavy in my arms, like contraband. I carried them to the my corner and hid them under the table. I sat down, and opened the first book.

She poured herself another glass of cheap red, already on her third, and dropped onto the couch in her pencil skirt and blouse, buttons half undone. The city lights through the rain-streaked windows. Her laptop was still open on the coffee table, case files glowing like accusatory little rectangles. She should sleep. Instead she reached for the dusty old book she’d bought on a drunken whim two years ago at that weird occult shop downtown. *Daemonologie for the Modern Woman.* Stupid. But tonight it felt like the right kind of stupid. She flipped it open, scanned a page at random, and slurred the words under her breath. Latin? Probably, didn’t matter.
