Some characters are permanently shaped by their first narrator's voice in my head. Planer's Death (with the CAPITAL LETTERS) is so definitive that I hear it when I read the physical books. Briggs's version is good, but it doesn't have that same otherworldly, resonant quality for me. Okay, I need to go listen to that scene in 'Jingo' where the Watch is on the boat again. Briggs's delivery of Vimes's internal monologue about the shape of the world and the water is just... chills. Actual chills. Planer is brilliant, but I don't think he could have mined the profound sadness and anger in that moment the same way. Briggs makes you feel the weight of the badge.
