Any list needs M. Rickert’s ‘The Christmas Witch.’ It’s a beautiful, sad, and deeply unsettling story where the psychological horror is woven into grief and memory. The fear is soft and melancholy, rooted in a mother’s loss and the lengths she might go to in a world where magic might be real. It blurs the line between fantasy and delusion in a way that leaves you emotionally raw and uncertain.
For a more recent voice, Kelly Link’s 'The Specialist’s Hat' is wonderfully weird and psychologically potent. It blends fairy-tale logic with childhood games and parental neglect. The fear is in the uncanny—the twins’ game blurring with something possibly real, and the ambiguous fate that befalls them. It creates a dreamlike dread where the rules of reality are suspended, leaving the reader and characters equally unmoored.
Man, after reading some of these suggestions, I need to go watch some cartoons. This is getting too heavy! Brilliant stories, but man, they stick with you in the worst/best way.
Poe’s 'The Tell-Tale Heart' is the blueprint. The fear isn't in the murder; it's in the narrator’s frantic, obsessive insistence on his own sanity. You’re trapped inside a mind that is loudly, proudly coming apart. The psychological terror is in the rhythm of his paranoia, the beating heart that may or may not be real. It’s a short, sharp lesson in unreliable narration creating a claustrophobic atmosphere of guilt and mounting madness.
Jerome Bixby’s ‘It’s a Good Life’ (the ‘Twilight Zone’ story) is terrifying in its exploration of absolute power wielded by a child. The psychological fear is the collective repression of an entire town, forced to constantly think happy thoughts lest they be ‘wished away.’ The horror is the claustrophobia of living under capricious, omnipotent tyranny, where your own mind is policed. It’s a nightmare of enforced normalcy.

“I’m not…” The words die on my lips as his eyes darken.
“Touch yourself. Dig your finger into your hole and see for yourself just how filthy you are.”

Can we get a list going in the replies? All this talk is making me want to re-read some classics and find new ones. I feel like I've only scratched the surface of what's out there beyond the usual King and Poe recommendations.
I’d recommend looking into Robert Aickman’s 'strange stories'. He called them 'strange' rather than horror. Stories like 'The Hospice' or 'The Swords' present scenarios that are just off, with no clear explanation. The dread lingers because the rules are never explained; you’re just left with a profound sense of wrongness and ambiguity. It’s deeply unsettling.
Anyone else find that the most effective psychological horror short stories are the ones you can't really summarize? The plot sounds simple, but the feeling they leave you with is this heavy, complicated dread that's impossible to shake. That's the mark of a true specialist, I think.
