A recent discovery for me: the 'Hawthorne and Horowitz' series I already mentioned is great, but for a historical duo with a similar 'author detective' vibe, the 'Charles Lenox' series by Charles Finch is wonderful. A Victorian gentleman detective in London's upper crust. The early books are straight, excellent whodunits, but the series grows into more political and personal territory as Lenox's life changes.

They're impeccably researched, elegantly written, and feature a protagonist who is kind and intelligent without being broody. The supporting cast, especially his butler-turned-partner Graham and his friend Lady Jane, is superb. It's a long series that maintains high quality, perfect for a lengthy, immersive binge.

If you're in the mood for a classic binge, why not go back to the queen of the manor house mystery, Agatha Christie? But instead of jumping around, pick a detective and read them in order. Marathoning Hercule Poirot's cases from 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles' onward is a masterclass in the evolution of the detective genre. You watch the little Belgian's world change around him from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Seeing recurring characters like Captain Hastings and Inspector Japp pop up feels like visiting old friends. The puzzles are timeless, and reading them consecutively highlights Christie's incredible ingenuity—she rarely repeats a trick.

For a locked-room mystery binge in a unique setting, the 'Kyoichiro Kaga' series by Keigo Higashino is translated from Japanese but fits the 'English mystery' request if we're talking language. The 'Detective Galileo' series (starting with 'The Devotion of Suspect X') is even more bingeable. Higashino's genius is in showing you the 'who' and 'how' at the beginning, making the mystery all about the 'why' and the cat-and-mouse game of proof.

They are incredibly clever, psychologically intense, and read like sleek thrillers. Each book is a self-contained masterpiece of plotting, so you get a huge payoff every time, which fuels the need to immediately experience that cleverness again with the next one.

Can we talk about the 'Veronica Speedwell' series by Deanna Raybourn? A lepidopterist and a natural historian solving crimes in Victorian London with unbelievable chemistry and razor-sharp banter. The sexual tension between Veronica and Stoker is the slowest of burns, and it's delicious.

Each book has a fantastic, often gothic-tinged mystery, but you keep reading for the characters and their evolving partnership. They're witty, adventurous, and surprisingly progressive. You'll plow through them grinning like a fool, and then be desperately impatient for the next one. Perfect for historical mystery lovers who like their protagonists fiercely independent and funny.
