I can't get enough of stories where they're secretly working together all along. The 'pretend enemies to actual allies' dynamic hits different with these two. Kokichi's compulsive lying and Shuichi's need to deduce the truth creates this perfect tension—they're constantly poking at each other's core skills. A plot where Kokichi's web of deception is actually a shield for Shuichi, and the detective has to slowly, painfully realize he's being protected by the person he distrusts most? That's the good stuff.
Stories that nail Shuichi's internal conflict are my favorite. Watching him shift from viewing Kokichi as an obstacle to understanding him as a tragically necessary piece of the game's puzzle just wrecks me. The best fics make you feel that dawning horror and respect simultaneously.
Also, anything that explores Kokichi's softer side without making him ooc. Not full-blown fluff, but those quiet moments where the performance drops because he's too exhausted to keep it up around the one person who might actually see through it.

Post-canon fix-its where they both survive are my weak spot. The exploration of trauma and recovery through their specific lens—Kokichi dealing with the fallout of his lies when the game's pressure is off, Shuichi grappling with trusting someone who fundamentally unsettles him—has so much potential. It’s less about tropes and more about the character study that their pairing uniquely allows.

Honestly, I'm tired of seeing the same few setups over and over. The 'caretaker' trope where Shuichi nurses a sick or injured Kokichi feels lazy now. It often strips Kokichi of his agency just to force proximity. I prefer fics where the power dynamic is more complex, like a reluctant partnership forged out of mutual survival when they're isolated from the group.
Give me something where their contrasting methods are the focus. Maybe they're forced to solve a mystery outside the killing game, and Kokichi's chaotic, morally grey intel gathering actually complements Shuichi's methodical approach, even as it frustrates him. The conflict should come from clashing ideologies, not just 'tsundere Kokichi' nonsense.
Angst with a purpose works, but the resolution needs to feel earned. If they end up together, it shouldn't be because Kokichi was 'fixed' by love, but because Shuichi learns to accept the parts of him that are messy and contradictory.

You shouldn’t want it this bad.
You definitely shouldn’t be leakíng just thinking about it.
But when the man who controls your apartment / your job / your car keys steps too close and says
“On your knees. Now.”
your body betrays you before your brain can catch up.
These aren’t love stories.
They’re short, fílthy lessons in what happens when a younger boy forgets who’s in charge.
He pins your wrists above your head.
He spreads you with rough fingers first — then with something much thicker.
He pucks you until your legs give out, until you’re crying into the sheets/car hood/desk, until you’re so fúll of him that every step afterward reminds you who you belong to tonight.
One word unlocks everything:
“Yes, Sir.”
And once you say it… you don’t get to take it back.
Standalone. Addictive. Filthy.
You’re going to read one chapter and immediately need the next.

The AUs always grab me first. Domestic settings where they're stuck together post-game and have to navigate ordinary life with all that baggage—one of my favorites had them running a detective agency where Kokichi constantly plants fake evidence just to mess with Shuichi, but it slowly becomes their weird, twisted love language. There's also a lot of bodyguard/celebrity or hacker/detector AUs that play on their canon dynamic from 'Danganronpa V3' but in a less lethal setting.
High school or college rivals-to-lovers is huge too, often with a fake-dating trope woven in because it suits Kokichi's lying nature so well. I've seen a few where they're paired for a project and Kokichi's 'pranks' escalate from annoying to genuinely flustered, which is a great slow-burn vehicle. Post-canon fix-its where Shuichi has to deal with the survivors' guilt and Kokichi's ghost or a virtual remnant are less common but can hit really hard emotionally, exploring grief and ambiguous legacies.
It's interesting how that pairing tends to circle back to a few specific ideas. The fanfics I've read often fixate on truth versus lies as a central conflict, which makes sense given their roles in the game. Shuichi's drive to uncover reality clashing with Kokichi's chaotic, deceptive nature creates a built-in tension writers love to explore. You get a lot of stories where their dynamic becomes a battle of wits that slowly unravels into something more vulnerable.
Beyond the intellectual game, there's a heavy focus on redemption or healing. Kokichi's portrayed as deeply lonely under his performative shell, and Shuichi becomes the one person stubborn enough to see past the lies. That leads to a lot of hurt/comfort scenarios, where Shuichi's calm persistence chips away at Kokichi's defenses. The emotional payoff usually hinges on Kokichi reluctantly accepting care, or Shuichi learning that some lies are protective rather than malicious.
I've also noticed a subset of fics that lean into darker, more obsessive themes. Kokichi's manipulative streak gets amplified, and Shuichi's anxiety becomes a focal point for a toxic, codependent relationship. Those aren't my favorite takes, but they exist and explore a different emotional territory, like possession and the cost of loving someone who can't stop playing games. The lighter fics might end with them playing video games together, but the darker ones often leave things unresolved.
I’ve read a ton of Saiouma fics over the years, and it feels like the writers are always wrestling with the same fascinating contradiction. You’ve got this compulsive liar who craves attention and a detective who’s terrified of uncovering terrible truths. The most persistent theme I see isn’t pure romance; it’s a deep, messy exploration of truth versus lies as a form of intimacy. Does Shuichi learning to read Kokichi’s real tells beneath the performance become an act of love? Does Kokichi letting himself be ‘solved’ become his version of vulnerability? A lot of stories frame their dynamic as a puzzle where love is the solution, which can be really clever when done well.
A lot of authors also dig into the aftermath of trauma, but specifically how they might heal each other’s particular wounds. Kokichi’s isolation and Shuichi’s guilt aren’t just sad backstories; they’re tools. I’ve seen fics where Kokichi’s chaos becomes a way to shock Shuichi out of his depressive spirals, and Shuichi’s quiet determination becomes a safe anchor Kokichi never knew he wanted. The theme isn’t just ‘healing’—it’s about two broken pieces fitting together in a jagged, unexpected way that somehow works.
For Danganronpa crossovers, I usually head straight to Archive of Our Own and filter by the 'Crossover' tag. That tag system works better than most search bars. I'll sometimes sort by 'Kudos' just to skip past the half-baked ideas, though occasionally something weird and new at the bottom catches my eye. Wattpad has a ton too, but I find the quality varies more wildly there.
AO3's other fandom filter is key. If you're looking for Kokichi and Shuichi tossed into, say, 'Persona 5' or 'My Hero Academia', you just add those fandom tags. It's the easiest way to see if anyone's had that specific mashup idea. I found a really fun one where they were stuck in the 'Among Us' map, which shouldn't have worked but totally did.
Tumblr's a bit more of a deep dive—you have to follow the right blogs or dig through specific ship tags. But sometimes an author will post a snippet there before cross-posting to a bigger site, so it's worth a scroll if you're hunting for rare content.
