I have a soft spot for 'Epic' by Conor Kostick. It's a YA novel where society is governed by outcomes in a fantasy VR game. The worldbuilding of the game itself is fairly standard fantasy fare, but the brilliance is in the societal worldbuilding around it. The entire economy, justice system, and social status are tied to performance in the game. The stakes feel incredibly real because your character's death in the game has dire real-world consequences. It's a great exploration of how a virtual world can become the absolute center of a civilization's structure.
A surprisingly good middle-grade take is 'The Wild Robot' by Peter Brown. Again, not VR. But hear me out: the robot is programmed, and it learns to adapt to a natural world by building models and protocols—essentially, building a world-model to understand its environment. The process of a logical consciousness trying to make sense of and navigate a complex, organic world is very similar to a user learning the rules of a VR space. The 'worldbuilding' is the robot's internal map and understanding growing more detailed. It's a beautiful metaphor for the process of immersion.
I keep hoping for a novel that does for VR what 'Piranesi' did for a mysterious house. A story completely immersed in exploring and cataloging a beautiful, bizarre, and lonely virtual world for its own sake, with a slow-burn mystery about why it exists. Most VR stories are about escaping it, conquering it, or revealing it as a trap. I want one that treats the VR world as a place of genuine wonder and discovery, where the protagonist's goal is simply to understand its architecture and history. That's my niche desire for worldbuilding.
I'm just here for the comments. My knowledge of VR novels begins and ends with 'Ready Player One', and I thought it was just okay. The world felt like a bunch of references stapled together. I'm taking notes from this thread for something with more substance.
Can we talk about the 'Silicon World' series? No? Just me? It's an indie series that got big on Amazon Kindle Unlimited. The premise is that humanity uploads to a virtual universe to escape a dying Earth, but the simulation starts to degrade. The worldbuilding is all about the glitches—areas where the code is failing, creating surreal and dangerous anomalies. The society inside has to develop lore and religions around these glitches. It's a cool take on how a world's mythology would form around its underlying technical failures.

One moment he had just read the strangest book he had ever come across, the next he was stumbling into the world of that same book.
Now Mars is trapped in a fantasy world as a nobody, and the gorgeous, cruel Crown Prince who just kidnapped him thinks he's a spy. Keith Elarion's solution? Keep Mars under his personal, infuriatingly attractive supervision.
Mars’s plan is simple- survive, avoid the plot, and find a way home. But the prince is nothing like the two-dimensional villain from the book. Keith is all intense green eyes and confusing, rough kindness, and he’s decided Mars is his to keep. When Mars accidentally unleashes a power he should not possess, he becomes the key to a conspiracy that runs deeper than the novel ever revealed.
His meddling changes everything, accelerating a plot that was supposed to take years.
To top it off, a cryptic bird-god just told Mars he's not just a lost college student.
He's the son of the goddess who made this world.
To save Keith, stop a divine war, and maybe finally kiss the man he falls hopelessly in love with, Mars has to do the one thing the book never planned for: he has to rewrite fate itself.

Anya and Sadie thought they would be distant but with every step they took, they started to know so much about each other and what they have one thing in common: they hated how the world has become. They then thought what if they rebuild Earth where it is all ruled by them--and only both of them. The two then thought what if we start to make it a reality?
As they go on the journey to create their own world, Anya sees that Sadie is more than an outcast and Sadie sees that Anya is more than just a star--they are each other’s world.

I read 'Heir Apparent' by Vivian Vande Velde as a kid, and it stuck with me. It's about a girl trapped in a faulty VR arcade game where if she dies, the feedback loop could kill her in real life. She has to win the game to survive. It's a middle-grade/early YA book, so it's straightforward, but the concept of being stuck in a flawed, glitchy system is executed with real tension. A great intro to the stakes of VR for younger readers.
