The best place is absolutely AO3, no contest. The tag system lets you drill down so precisely. Go to the OUAT fandom tag, then filter by the 'Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence' tag. You can add a second filter for 'Fix-It' or 'Happy Ending' if you want a specific mood. The quality of writing there is generally higher, and you can sort by kudos or bookmarks to find the community favorites. I found this incredible longfic where the final battle goes differently and Emma becomes the Dark One again, but this time Regina has to save her—it completely recontextualized the last season for me. Some writers even do series where each story is a different 'what if' scenario for the finale. Just be prepared to sift; there's a lot of content, but the gems are worth it.

Looking for that kind of twist on 'Once Upon a Time'? I totally get the impulse after that finale. Honestly, my search usually starts on Archive of Our Own because the tagging system is so specific. If you filter for the 'Alternate Ending - Canon Divergence' tag on the main OUAT fandom page, you'll hit gold. The Emma/SwanQueen stuff obviously has a ton, but some of the best ones I've found are actually Rumple-centric fics that rewrite his final sacrifice.
I'd also check out specific collections. Some writers group their 'fix-it' fics together. Searching for phrases like 'season seven rewrite' or 'different curse' pulls up stuff that essentially creates a whole new ending. There's a writer on there, their handle is something like 'wanderingstorybrooke', who does these amazing, melancholic one-shots where Regina becomes the sole author of the book and just... writes a better closing chapter for everyone. The prose feels like the early seasons.
Don't sleep on Fanfiction.net either, even if it's older. The 'What If?' category is packed with fics from back when the show was airing, where people were speculating on endings mid-season. The quality can be hit or miss, but the ideas are wild and raw. That's where I found a fic where Henry stays the author and uses the pen to give everyone a mundane, curse-free life in Boston, which was weirdly moving.
Honestly, half my finds come from following rec lists on Tumblr. The fandom's still pretty active there, and if you find one blog that reblogs alternate ending fics, you can fall down a rabbit hole for hours. Just seeing those different final moments for the characters makes the original ending easier to swallow, in a way.

Tumblr's still weirdly good for this. Follow blogs that tag consistently (#ouat fanfic #ouat alternate ending). Writers often cross-post snippets or links to their AO3 works there. I found a whole thread of micro-fics imagining different last lines for the series. The community curation leads you to stuff the algorithm might miss.

This might sound a bit obvious, but have you tried just searching the pairing tags you like plus 'canon divergence'? I was hunting for SwanQueen alt-endings for ages and kept getting swamped with AUs that changed the start of the story. What clicked for me was realizing that the 'Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence' tag on AO3 is where writers usually note which episode they're branching off from. So I'd search 'SwanQueen' + 'Canon Divergence' and then just scan the summaries for mentions of 'Season 6 finale' or 'After 6x22'.
There's also a surprising amount on smaller, niche forums if the fandom's old show like this. I stumbled on a dedicated OUAT story archive once, just a simple website, that had a whole section called 'Rewritten Finales.' The formatting was basic, but the stories had this passionate, unfiltered energy you sometimes don't get on the big archives. One was just a detailed outline of how the writer would have ended the Charmings' arc, and it was more satisfying than hours of filmed TV.
My personal take? The alt-endings that work best aren't always the epic, plot-heavy rewrites. Sometimes it's a quiet character piece set after the finale, showing a small moment that implies a different path was taken. Those feel more real to me.

Man, diving into OUAT fanfic feels like stepping into a library where every door leads to another world. There are so many fics with magical adventures, but I think the ones that capture that fairy tale essence best are the crossovers or alternate reality types. There's one I read years ago where Emma and Killian get sucked into the 'Neverland' book from 'Once Upon a Time in Wonderland'—it was less about just fighting pirates and more about them actually navigating the logic of a storybook where the rules kept changing. The magic felt unpredictable, which made the adventure tense.
I'm less into the modern AUs for this kind of request. You really need the author to commit to building a new magical system or exploring an untouched corner of the Enchanted Forest. A story focusing on the Black Fairy's realm before she was corrupted, or a quest where young Regina and young Snow have to team up by accident—those concepts have so much potential for adventure that feels fresh but still rooted in that show's particular blend of whimsy and darkness. I tend to sort by 'Complete' and 'Adventure' on AO3 and just get lost.
