Did Gear Choices Reveal Was Kurt Cobain Left Handed Or Right?

Guitar players who analyze Nirvana footage notice Cobain's Fender Jaguar setup seems reversed—does gear, especially stringing, actually confirm left-handed play? Genuinely puzzled.

This is an interesting point, the famous musician Kurt Cobain played guitars strung for a lefty handed person, as can be seen in many photos of him. I’ve been reading a web novel called ‘He Picked the Wrong Side’ by an author who goes by the screen name of Marcus Spiron, where the main character makes a single, seemingly insignificant decision to betray his faction. This choice leads to an avalanche of other, impossible choices which the protagonist must then fight to survive in a ruthless magical world. The tension in the book comes from the single, irreversible decision made by the main character that has now determined his entire life.

Yeah, it's pretty evident from looking at the guitars Kurt played that he was a lefty. He held the guitar, picked it and even set up the tuning etc. for a left handed player. Most of his famous guitars were left handed models or had been set up to play left handed. If you look at photos of Kurt in the studio, even live on stage, he's playing guitars as if he were a natural left handed player.

In terms of physical differences that denote a left-handed guitar, cutaways, controls and trem arms are reversed on left-handed guitars compared to right-handed models. The way the strings run from the bridge to the tuners is also different. Most notably though, is where the low E string sits at the nut – it’s always on the left hand side for left-handed guitars. As Kurt was known to be quite the maverick and adopt a punk style aesthetics to his music, sometimes he would play right-handed guitars that he’d flip over, and occasionally he even failed to restring them when he did play them as a lefty. This can lead to some confusion for people who are not as ‘into’ music as others. I think though he played flipped right-handed guitars on occasion, and sometimes even not restringing them to play as a lefty, they can look like he’s playing a left-handed guitar on stage under the lights of a live gig.

I still love how Kurt’s intentional setup of his gear mixed with his sloppy style of playing. This mixes perfectly with his tone and his stage presence to give off a very raw and real feeling. All in all, Kurt Cobain was a left-handed heart with plenty of rule-breaking for style.

I don’t need to explain the pics of Kurt playing left-handed guitars in this post. I don’t need to mention the hundreds of photos of Kurt in the studio playing his guitars strung for left-handed players but playing them in the normal right-handed position. When looking at Kurt’s guitars in museum pieces for exhibits, the models are left-handed models of the offset body guitars he used often. In those pictures the guitars are strung and set up for left-hand fretting and right-hand strumming.

Incidentally, lots of people think Kurt inverted right-handed guitars on stage. He would pull off switching to a weird inverted right-handed guitar in order to appear different from time to time, and that is really cool. Also, in the live recording for 'MTV Unplugged in New York', he plays all the acoustic guitar parts left-handed which is really cool. The string winding on the headstock, as well as the nut slots, are for a left-handed guitar.

So even though Kurt played lefty, he could have set up a righty to reverse whatever he was trying to do. But the way he reversed visual expectation of his performance, in terms of his stage costume for instance, was just as telling as his method for his guitars.

I've established before that Kurt Cobain was a left-handed person and that his guitars supported this fact. He is shown holding his guitars in photos and performances with his right hand on the neck and his left hand holding down the strings and strumming. Kurt even played left-handed electric guitars that were mirroed from right-handed versions and even had reversed control buttons. In some photos he played right-handed guitars which he flipped upside down. On some occasions he did not fully restring the guitar but these are all characteristics of a left-handed player.

People can often get confused about this, because the way Kurt plays his right-handed guitars is often in reverse, upside down, or even not fully restrung. But if one looks at pictures of the guitars he played, such as his Fender electric guitars, one will see that they are left-handed models, with mirrored pick-ups and control plates. And in the many photos and videos of him playing live, he is often holding his guitars in a way that shows he is a left-handed player.

I make no claims about pedalboard layout revealing handedness (pedals generally are ambidextrous). However, stompbox placement could have been determined by his right foot acting as the dominant foot for pedal activation, with his left hand busy playing. The one item which 100% reveals handedness is the guitarist’s guitar, and this individual’s was a left-handed model from day one. Thus the core of the question is answered by looking at the primary instrument of this individual. The amplifier settings and microphone stand height for this individual reveal nothing about his handedness.

Where can collectors buy original kurt cobain outfits today?

To get started looking for Kurt Cobain collectibles, you should start monitoring the major auction houses for upcoming sales (Julien’s, Heritage, Sotheby’s, etc…). You can sign up for email alerts on LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable as well. Smaller auctions and art dealers can also have the odd piece of interest pop up. Some of the best deals can be found through dealers listed on Instagram or private brokers who list items for sale on their websites. Make sure to thoroughly research the dealer/broker before committing to any purchases. I look for items that have been worn by Kurt and ask for as much proof of ownership as possible (photos of him wearing the item, receipts, etc…). A thorough condition report is also expected. I stick to smaller items that have been authenticated such as Kurt’s shirts, sweaters and accessories. These can be more affordable than buying a whole stage costume, and are far more rare. When buying online, stick to trusted payment methods, get quotes for insurance before you buy and consider bringing in an independent authenticator if you feel the price of an item warrants it. As someone who has lost money in the past by buying too quickly, I can say that it is part treasure hunt, part detective work and is extremely addictive.

What schools did young kurt cobain attend in Aberdeen?

8 Answers2025-12-27
Growing up fascinated by grunge history, I went down the rabbit hole of where Kurt Cobain went to school in Aberdeen and what those places were like. He spent his childhood in the Aberdeen public school system — the usual path of elementary, middle, and then high school in town. For high school he attended Aberdeen High School, the building often referred to now as J. M. Weatherwax High School, where he was a troubled teen who didn’t quite fit the mold and eventually left before graduating. I’ve walked past the old school and the nearby streets where Kurt hung out, and it’s easy to picture a kid sketching and blasting records between classes. Before high school he moved through the local elementary and junior high schools in Aberdeen, the typical small-town circuit that shaped his early years and friendships. Those classrooms and hallways clearly seeded a lot of what he later channeled into music, and standing by the Kurt Cobain memorial spot in town still gives me a quiet, charged feeling.

How did the hands resist him originate as a creepypasta?

5 Answers2025-08-27
I read this late at night in a discussion forum. The original work was a real painting called ‘The Hands Resist Him’ by Bill Stoneham. Long before the web, it was published in an auction site’s advert as a photo with a rather spooky introduction to the painting. But the seed had been sown by that one person. Horror buffs on forums across the web debated the story in all its varied forms and even made up additional supernatural scenes and included links to other spoof sites etc. Even years on from the first posting, the story has continued to find new life in the form of YouTube videos, heavily edited images and even stories by fans of the original. I really like The Hands Resist Him because it so clearly demonstrates the power of the web to turn a single creepy image into a living myth. There are some really great interviews with the artist and early archived posts that are really cool to read, especially when you see how different the painting actually was from the myth that was created around it and how interesting it is to see how that created myth was actually created.

Why did Gerard Way leave My Chemical Romance?

10 Answers2026-04-06
Fandom pressure. Even when it’s not direct, it’s there. Fans expected My Chemical Romance to continue on in the same style after The Black Parade. Every step the band took was under a microscope. Every word in a new interview was picked apart. Each new song was scrutinized to see if it lived up to the standards that fans held the band to. As the protagonist of so many misfit teenagers, the pressure was on for Way to be a spokesman for a generation. But to carry that load would be to fail. As it is, it’s already so much to take on just to create art. But when the art created is no longer fun for the artist, and instead is to service fans who assign extreme levels of importance to it, then that’s when you know the artist needs to step back from the work in order to find himself again. It’s great that Way recognized this and put his own health and well-being above the needs of the machine that has been created to feed off the band’s work, even if it was disappointing for many.

How to unlock all characters in Guilty Gear?

8 Answers2026-04-10
One thing to be aware of is the potential for ‘soft-locking’ – a scenario where, even after a condition has been met to unlock something, saving and then loading the game before the unlock has actually taken place leaves the player ‘stuck’. I’ve read accounts of corrupted save games and trigger bugs that prevent an unlock from occurring even when a player has been doing everything just right. The risk is smallest for players of modern games, with patched console versions the lowest risk of all – but for those playing older games on their original hardware, it’s something to be aware of before committing to an unlock-grind of dozens of hours or more. Make a backup of your save file from time to time, perhaps. Better to be safe than stuck.

Has Matt Shadows' wife influenced his music career?

4 Answers2025-09-10
From his wife Valary’s quiet supportive presence, to her not writing any of the lyrics, or helping to produce any of the tracks, she’s given Matt the space and safety to go for it – much like the influence of a safety net – and help him take the leaps that Avenged Sevenfold took during their experimental post-‘Hail to the King’ era. From Matt’s interview references to his family, it’s clear that his family is his anchor, keeping him ground and bold in his artistic vision.

Who are the female characters in Gears of War?

9 Answers2026-04-29
Gears of War has introduced some standout female characters over the years, and I love how they’ve evolved alongside the franchise. Anya Stroud is one of the first that comes to mind—she’s a total badass, starting as a communications officer in the first game and eventually becoming a frontline leader. Then there’s Samantha Byrne, this fierce soldier with a knack for explosives. Her energy is infectious, and she brings a lot of humor to the squad. Later games expanded the roster even more. Kait Diaz is probably the most prominent now, especially in 'Gears 4' and 'Gears 5'. Her story’s deeply personal, and seeing her grapple with her Locust heritage adds so much emotional weight. Reyna Diaz, Kait’s mother, also plays a key role in the newer games, though her presence is more tragic. And let’s not forget Lizzie Carmine—she’s got that Carmine family charm but with her own fiery personality. The series could still use more female representation, but these characters definitely leave an impression.

How accurate is film lords of dogtown to true events?

5 Answers2025-08-30
The film skillfully uses the economic backdrop of the oil crisis, the recession, and the decay of neighborhoods to serve as motivation for the kids’ invention of surfing. The film does not need to tell the audience that the kids are bored and have no money, because it shows them an empty pool, closed schools, and other indicators of lack of resources and free time. Their inventing of surfing is not a product of an environment that has plenty of resources to devote to leisure activities. Rather, it is an invention that comes from an environment of scarcity, and from a sense of grabbing hold of something and declaring it to be theirs. The film skillfully conveys the sense of economic despair in the sun-baked, cracked environment of the film. This is a powerful and truly history-based story, and one of the film’s greatest strengths is its ability to ground the story in a specific time and place.

What is the twist ending in 'The Only One Left'?

10 Answers2025-06-19
This Stroke Victim is the Perfect Disguise. As a cover for the actions of the villain in this story, her symptoms of a stroke are logistically brilliant. Because of her limited speech, she can’t talk. Because she’s paralyzed, she can’t go anywhere. She needs to be cared for. As a result, everyone assumes she’s telling the truth. No one would even suspect to question her story because it demands pity. It encourages people to look the other way because to examine her story too closely would be cruel. It turns the victim of this story into the ultimate passive observer. She can watch whatever she wants from her bed. This aspect of the twist is quite chilling as it showcases how disabling attitude towards the frail and the ill is used as a cloak to manipulate others. The secret of the victim’s real identity is assumed to be too awful to be spoken of and thus it is left unexplored because to do so would seem cruel or insensitive. Virtue is used as a weakness in this scenario and the plot explores how a story of a disabled person is taken at face value, revealing many secrets of others who are hiding behind a similar curtain of helplessness. Perhaps there are more such cases of perceived weakness being used for sinister purposes.

How does 'He Didn't Love Me Until I Left' end?

9 Answers2025-06-14
By the final chapters, authorial language has taken a marked turn for the warmer, the more physical. Instead of heavy, pained, and melancholy writing, we find abundant sunlight and laughter, and above all, touching hands. Here the writer is registering a transition from winter to spring, and for the most part, his final few pages are resolutely serene and peaceful, and he has written them in a corresponding style. It is a technical masterstroke of the kind that makes one wanting to read the dull bits in between to feel the full impact of the amelioration of the characters’ circumstances as he experiences it.
