Unlocking fighters for the ‘Guilty Gear’ series can evoke feelings of retrogaming nostalgia and test one’s patience, depending on the game in question. ‘Guilty Gear -Strive-’ does little to require character activation outside of including almost every playable fighter from launch with individual characters being added post-launch as DLC. Meanwhile, returning to ‘Guilty Gear XX’ is a completely different experience where characters such as Kliff and Justice can require an entire arcade mode clear or (in some instances) unknown button combinations to unlock each fighter. The entire process of unlocking Kliff to unlock Justice took an entire weekend of the developer’s time, only for him to realize he missed a single step in the process to unlock the character.

Most of all, I feel that the series to date has always been a series that rewards your persistence more than any thing. As a kid, I spent hours trying to unlock Kliff in ‘Guilty Gear XX’ before realizing his unlock sequence was something I had to enter at the game’s title screen. The sense of accomplishment when he finally was unlocked and was available to fight was like nothing else.

As for the older titles, remember that you can unlock characters in training mode or even in survival mode, for example Robo-Ky or Order-Sol. Of course, there are also cheats to unlock all characters directly, as there are in many fighting games. Even though they’re not very satisfying, there are situations in which you only want to unlock all the characters of Guilty Gear quickly in order to play versus mode with your friends. The ways of the series to hide its cast of characters is always rather quirky and a lot of fun.
