What Genre Does 'James' Belong To?

I was expecting a plot to unfold at some point, but instead the plot is the atmosphere of the book. It’s a horror novel that develops slowly and fills its readers with dread, with disgust, and with despair in the end. It’s a historical fantasy novel and the story takes place in a petri dish of sorts that allows the atmosphere to unfold. The characters and the plot twists are hardly developed, because they would distract from the oppressive atmosphere of the novel. This is a novel that you experience more than you read. If you’re a reader who reads for mood and setting above all else, then this is a masterpiece of a novel. But if you’re a reader who needs a plot to drive the novel, then you’ll be frustrated. Atmopheric horror is a genre that serves to further develop the atmosphere of a novel, as opposed to the other way around.

it's one of those stories that defies simple genre labels. At its core, it blends urban fantasy with heavy metaphysical elements, creating this rich tapestry where modern settings collide with ancient magic systems. The protagonist's journey through self-discovery mirrors classic coming-of-age arcs, but the supernatural twists push it firmly into speculative fiction territory. The magic system itself feels like a mix of occultism and quantum physics, with characters manipulating reality through esoteric knowledge. This gives the story a distinct philosophical edge that reminds me of works like 'The Magicians' but with a darker, more experimental tone. The author isn't afraid to explore abstract concepts like consciousness manipulation and parallel dimensions, which adds layers of psychological depth. What really stands out is how seamlessly it incorporates elements from multiple genres. There are clear influences from cosmic horror in the way ancient entities are portrayed, yet the character-driven narrative keeps it grounded. Action sequences read like shonen manga at times, while the political intrigue between magical factions could fit right into a high fantasy novel. This genre-blending approach makes 'A Nascent Kaleidoscope' feel fresh and unpredictable.

Ricochet is a cyberpunk neo-noir, with a healthy dose of existential drama. The futuristic tech is presented as cutting-edge but flawed in subtle but realistic ways – holographic projections glitching and collapsing, cyberware overloading and malfunctioning. But it is the influence of the classic noir that is most pronounced – the protagonist’s first person narrative is as hard-boiled and cynical as any private eye from the 1940s. He’s been hired for a heist, which has gone catastrophically wrong. This is a solid, thought-provoking, uniquely-written story that breaks outside of normal cyberpunk genre mechanics to thoughtfully and philosophically expound on aspects of identity as generated and manipulated through use of memory-scrambled technology – the hallmark of a rare and intuitive science fiction author a la Philip K. Dick, while documenting an unpleasant critique of the later stages of capitalism as currently realized (paying off debts by selling human organs) which, again, is very Phillp K. Dick-esque. Everywhere-going and tough, the combat in this is extremely visceral, and always serves a purpose to reveal more about the individual involved as well as greater information regarding the outer landscape they’re fighting within. Fans of Altered Carbon who are looking for a far more soul-searching read will find this to be exactly what they’ve been looking for.

This sounds like ‘Wife Lit’ a sub-genre of fiction that focuses on stories told from the wife’s perspective in troubled or unsatisfactory marriages. It is akin to ‘Chick Lit’ in that the married woman seeks to find herself, and go back to her pursuits which she put on hold when she married, to find her strength and grow up. While there may be a romance element to the story the main focus will be on whether the two can have a new and equal relationship or not. ‘Wife Lit’ is a fiction genre that focuses on the married woman’s journey of self-discovery within the confines of her current committed relationship or after she has left it.

Genre debates are fun to have but this book is a great example of why we fail with it. A love story in a novel about grief. A book of oceanic body horror and ecological dread. It is its own genre. Julia Armfield is a short story writer and this novel shows off her skills at short story writing. It is precise, atmospheric and thematic. It’s a novel of ideas with a very chilly metaphor at its center. I wouldn’t recommend this based on genre but on mood. If you want a really melancholic read that is beautifully written and will be deeply unsettling and ultimately extremely painful then read this. The horror in this is a flavor not the whole meal. The whole meal is watching the person you love drift away to a place that you cannot follow.

This is psychological fantasy, where the magic is intrinsically linked to the minds, emotions, and/or trauma of the main characters. So, battles are fought out in their dreams, characters are locked in their memories, and the biggest monsters are the ones of fear or guilt. It’s an highly introspective genre and it explores how the internal world of any given character affects the reality in which they live, and that can be magnified and affected by magic. It’s largely an internal journey for the main characters: they may be on some kind of external quest, but primarily they’re on an internal one of healing and confronting their own personal demons – literally in some cases. It blurs the line between reality and perception and is written for people who want a deeply personal and complexly psychological take on the traditional fantasy.

In addition to really bringing out the romantic comedy in the book, the narrator also highlighted the grumpy lines of Knox and the over-the-top town busybodies. So in audiobook form, I would categorize this even more as a romantic comedy than I had when I read it. The humor is even more front-and-center in this form. I didn’t realize that genre was also affected by format. In print I focused more on the emotional inner lives of the characters. The same scenes were funny in audio because of the timing and characterisation of the narrator but in print I focused more on the witty dialogue and situation comedy. The humor was there in print but in audio it was more front and center. It’s a contemporary romance that can be more serious than funny or more funny than serious. It depends on how you read it and what resonates with you. That it is so versatile and can contain so much is a sign of a very good novel.

What I found really interesting is that this story does not end in England. James doesn’t return to claim the aunts’ house. Instead he leaves that entire world behind and sets up home in a totally new land with his new people. That this is an emigration story and that James finds a new home is interesting enough in itself. But also it is a really bold choice for a children’s book as late as this. It reinforces the idea that sometimes escape is the only answer and that your real ‘place’ is with your people, not where you started. And the ‘where’ of the ending is a statement: home is where you make it.

'Boy Meets Girl' - no, I’m joking! Descendants of the Sun is a really tricky drama to classify because the core of it is a romance but the military setting makes it so much more. It’s like a cross between Grey’s and Call of Duty but with much better character development and so much more chemistry. The personal struggles of the main characters and the professional struggles are intertwined and all made so much better by the side characters. Also, there’s this really fun squad of misfits and the hospital staff who add lots of comic relief and pathos. As a ‘gateway’ drama for new fans of the Korean drama scene, ‘Descendants of the Sun’ ticks all of the right boxes – plenty of action and a great love story. The soundtrack is still going strong and gets stuck in my head rent free!

'The Push' is a thriller, but it’s also something much darker and more complex. Primarily a story about motherhood and the myths that surround it, it explores some of the deepest, darkest fears that lie at the core of the biggest questions in human existence: could your child be fundamentally wrong? Could you be the worst parent in the world? It’s a really genre-fluid book, which is its strength. It’s a domestic” arena, but it’s also a really, really psychological and disturbing read.
