Prologue

Jane and James had only been married for a few months before things went wrong. Mrs. Watson, James' mother, introduced another woman, Cynthia, with hopes of replacing Jane.

James Watson didn't want anything to do with this woman, and he made it clear by chasing her out of the house.

After some peaceful months passed, Jane gave birth, but James had a terrible accident on the same day.

James lost all memory of his beloved wife and instead chose Cynthia because he only remembered her as his childhood sweetheart.

Feeling humiliated, Jane immediately called for a lawyer, drafted a divorce agreement, and signed it that very night.

When the lawyer brought it to James to sign, he was initially hesitant, but his mother's influence made him sign it.

After giving birth, Jane had an operation and needed more time to recover, but she didn't want to stay in the same hospital as James after signing the papers. She was too angry to even stay the night.

Her father, Mr. Smith, brought a driver to take them to her marital home to collect her things before she left for good.

On the way, a car trailed them and ran the Smiths' car off the road, where it rolled down the cliff, off the highway, towards the provincial road.

After the final roll, Jane's head was bleeding from the fall. The last thing she saw was the guard at the front of the car trying to save her son. The pain was too much for her to bear, and her eyes could not open properly as a thin liquid trickled down her face. Broken glass covered her body and the ground. Her dad was unconscious, with a cracked head and probably a major concussion.

She called out to her dad.

"Oh my God. Dad!" She called to him, but he was unresponsive. She couldn't feel her right leg as she tried to move to see Ethan, her son. The car's side window was long gone, lost somewhere while rolling down the steep hill. Ethan was nowhere to be seen.

"Ethan- aahhh." She felt sharp pain wash over her leg as she tried to get out of the car. Although the crash had entirely removed the door, she couldn't crawl out because her leg refused to budge.

She grabbed her own leg, forcefully pulling it up, which caused a sharp object to tear her flesh like paper. The excruciating pain made her choke on a cry that got caught in her throat.

Steeling herself against the pain, she pulled herself out.

She didn't have time to focus on her injuries as she crawled towards her son. He had been ejected from the car via the broken window. His tiny body was splayed on the ground, meters away. She could hear him crying and breathed a sigh of relief.

Jane was in pain, but that was the least of her worries. She couldn't be sure whether it was a freak accident or if someone was purposely trying to kill them.

She stood up and looked at her leg. It nearly made her faint. A sharp object had neatly lacerated her leg all the way from ankle to knee. Blood was pulsing out in time with each rapid beat of her heart. If she put any weight on it, more blood oozed out.

She crawled around the car to get her dad out, dragging her leg through the dirt. She bit her lip and pulled her dad out.

Tolerating the pain, she touched him and saw he was still breathing.

She then checked the driver, but, unfortunately, he was already gone.

She heard the guard groaning in her attempts to leave the car.

"Are you okay?" the guard asked, holding her bleeding hand.

"I am far from okay, but I can hold on," Jane said, pulling herself towards her baby, who was still crying. She picked him up. He was crying bitterly. She couldn't see where he was hurt.

Wiping the blood trickling from her forehead, she opened the covering and found the baby was unscathed. Her shoulders dropped with a sigh of relief, and her tired arms held her newborn son tightly.

"Call the ambulance," she told Ruth, the guard.

After some searching, Ruth found her phone and dialed. "It's not going through," Ruth said as she moved to check on Jane's father.

"Mr. Smith is not doing well."

"What are we going to do?"

Gunshots interrupted Ruth's response. As Jane turned, she watched Ruth's body fall unnaturally. She didn't wait to be told.

Holding her son in one arm, she moved towards the shrubs nearby as quickly as her broken body allowed. The area was a bit open, and anyone could see her running among the short shrubs. It was more of a walking race. If she put too much pressure on her leg, the pain would be nearly unbearable.

She ran towards the road, hoping that someone driving by would help them.

Before she could reach the road, a gunshot halted her progress. She heard it, and a second later, she felt it, piercing right through her chest.

She collapsed, letting go of the child. There were no cars. She could hear vehicles from far, but it would be too late to save her.

"Why?" She asked the masked man that had caught up to her, pointing a gun straight at her face

"We are just cutting loose ends. This is the price you must pay for being with James. He is not your man," he said before turning the gun to point at Ethan and pulling the trigger.

"Nooo. My son"
