The way his Quirk arrives is so... unglamorous. After all that buildup, it's not a beam from the sky. It's All Might plucking a hair off his head and telling the kid to eat it. It's funny and gross and kind of awkward. That mundanity makes the incredible power inside it even more surprising. But again, that's a volume 2 surprise.

It's interesting how the anime adaptation handles this. It covers the same ground but the episode break makes it feel more immediate. In the manga, turning that page from volume 1 to volume 2 is a physical act of anticipation. You have to seek out the next book. I think the manga's structural choice reinforces the theme of effort and pursuit.

The relationship with his mom is also key in volume 1. Her apology for his being Quirkless just wrecks me every time. It adds so much layers to his desire. He wants to be a hero not just for himself, but to tell her it's okay, that he can do it. That emotional core is more important than any power-up scene.

The contrast with Bakugo is also established here. Bakugo has an amazing Quirk handed to him and the confidence to match. Deku has nothing but notes and a dream. Their dynamic is set in stone in this volume, long before Deku has any power to rival him. That tension is pure gold.
