All of the 'Holes' PDFs I’ve found are pretty text-heavy, since the story itself is in the words of Louis Sachar and not reliant on illustrations for the main story. There was one teacher’s edition that had very small diagrams for the digging configurations and timelines for the story, but that was about it for extras.

If you need something more to look at while you listen, the audiobook is great. But for PDF lovers, this is a great, text-heavy story. No extra art is needed to tell this great adventure. The original PDF is lean and mean and a great read.

I think that most of the ‘Holes’ PDFs that I found did not have any illustrations. Although they were quite good because the writer painted a perfect picture in my mind, most of the PDFs only contained the text. I looked at a few editions on the web and so far, I have not found any illustrated versions (apart from school editions etc.) – most editions only contain the text. There are a few PDFs with doodles and fan art, but they are not official versions. I would recommend watching the movie if you want to see any illustrations of ‘Holes’. There may be some special editions of ‘Holes’ with illustrations in the book, but these are quite rare.

Since I collect unique editions of many of my favorite books, I am extremely interested in trying to locate special editions of Holes. The PDFs available online of Holes are mostly text-based and lack the illustrations found in printed editions of the book. The special edition that I found of interest is the 20th anniversary edition of Holes, which contains author notes and several sketches found throughout the book. While this edition does not contain full-page illustrations as found in the rest of the printed editions, the hardcover classroom editions of Holes do contain illustrations, maps of Camp Green Lake, and even character sketches.

For those interested in something more visual, I highly recommend the graphic novel adaptation by Louis Sachar and illustrator Braden Lamb. Although this is not available as a PDF, it is a beautifully realized work in full color. For PDFs of the book, however, you are left with the text version. I have seen a few examples of fan-created works of Hole art, but none of these are official.

I don't know how many chapters there actually are in this book. They all seem to blend together because each chapter follows the story well into the next. I enjoyed the movie adaptation as well. It was a great adaptation because it was condensed to fit into the time of a movie but still managed to get across the spirit of the book. I'm pretty curious to re-read this and find out all of the clever ways that the author set up the structure of the story that nobody has ever mentioned before. I had no idea that a children's book could be so complex beneath the surface of such a simple read.

In the grand scheme of things the controversy over this book is pretty small compared to its legacy. The book has sold millions of copies world wide. There was a major motion picture made from it. The book is found on the shelves of most libraries and is considered a classic of youth literature. The attempts to ban the book are just a footnote in the book’s Wikipedia article. What endures in the reader's mind long after the controversy has passed is the ingenious framework of the novel and its vividly imagined characters. Read and reread for decades on end, the satisfaction ofwatching all the separate storylines fall into place is one of the greatest pleasures of reading for a young person – or of any age. Others can frown upon this class of literature all they wish to; they are just opposing the wrong side of history on a really wonderful, fun, and highly constructed young person’s literature. I was a bit hit-or-miss with the new illustrations, some were wonderful (like the new version of the fig tree), but some felt like rehashes of better ideas. But, even when the pictures weren’t so great, Plath’s words were great enough to carry the new version. It’s a good choice for something to hold while reading about the poet, but it’s not going to be for everyone. The unillustrated version is still the best.

Even more beautiful are the little actions which show the huge change within Stan. When he first arrives, he’s intimidated by Mr. Sir. By the end, Stan catches the sunflower seed bag that Mr. Sir throws at him without so much as flinching. His vocabulary changes too. Instead of calling the other boys by their nicknames, he now refers to them by their full names as Hector Zeroni. The Warden, once almost revered by Stan, is no longer seen as legitimate. Even the way that Stan walks has changed. We see him trudging along when he’s walking into camp, but when he’s leaving with his suitcase, he’s striding along purposefully. And there’s the laughter – loud and carefree, unlike the laughter we see earlier in the book. Sachar does a beautiful job of illustrating this huge change within Stan, a change that is manifested through his actions. We don’t need to read some long, in depth speech to realize that he’s changed – we can clearly see the change through the way that he holds himself, interacts with others, and even takes control of small situations.

I see a number of comments below are mistakenly saying the 1611 KJV contained 80 books. It actually contained the 39 books of the Old Testament, 27 books of the New Testament and the 15 books of the Apocrypha (usually printed in a separate section). As was mentioned above, some of the Apocryphal books are counted as one book in some traditions (1 & 2 Esdras, for example) while in others they are listed separately (Baruch includes the Letter of Jeremiah, for example). The 15 books of the 1611 KJV’s Apocrypha are: 1 Esdras, 2 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, Additions to the Esther book, Wisdom of Solomon, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch and the Letter of Jeremiah, The Prayer of Azariah, Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, The Prayer of Manasseh, 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees. This totals 81 books. So while it is often said that the KJV contained 80 books, technically this is not correct.
