I always lean into the short story for pure, concentrated terror. It's harder to sustain dread over 500 pages. M.R. James's ghost stories are the foundation—'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad' is a masterpiece of slow-building anxiety from a seemingly harmless artifact. His protagonists are often arrogant academics undone by what they discover.
For contemporary short fiction, Nathan Ballingrud's 'North American Lake Monsters' is stunning. The supernatural elements erupt into the lives of broken, blue-collar characters. The terror is as much about their human failures as it is about the monsters. It's grim, poetic, and feels brutally honest.
Does magical realism count as supernatural terror? Sometimes the line is blurry. Mariana Enriquez's stories definitely do, but what about something like Gabriel García Márquez's 'A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings'? It's a short story about a fallen angel treated with contempt in a village. The terror is more existential and societal—the horror of the mundane reacting to the miraculous with cruelty and indifference.
For a novel-length example, Helen Oyeyemi's work often fits here. The supernatural isn't always a threat to be fought; it's a condition of the world that characters navigate, often with terrifying consequences for their sense of self. That's a subtler, but potent, kind of fear.
What about horror that comes from the inversion of the sacred? That's a potent supernatural fear. Think of William Peter Blatty's 'The Exorcist.' Beyond the shocking imagery, it's a terrifying theological battle. The idea of a demonic entity defiling innocence and using faith as a weapon is a deep, religious terror that resonates even if you're not religious.
On a different note, Mark Z. Danielewski's 'House of Leaves' is a meta-textual nightmare about a house that's bigger on the inside. The terror is labyrinthine, both in the literal exploration of the impossible space and in the nested, unreliable narratives trying to document it. It's an experience as much as a read.

Forget everything paranormal romance taught you about playing it safe. The vampires here don't sparkle and the werewolves don't apologize for their nature, here the demons are surprisingly good at negotiation.
Freaky After Dark is a collection of steamy paranormal stories where supernatural creatures get to be exactly what they are; powerful, possessive, and irresistibly magnetic.
These aren't just about pretty faces with fangs. Every creature has their own nature, their own needs, their own way of loving that's deliciously different from anything human.
From vampires whose bites promise pleasure to werewolves who claim their mates under the full moon and demons who seduce with words as much as touch, Nagas who wrap around you, Dragons whose warmth becomes addictive. And yes, a few beings with creative anatomy.
There's an actual story here with conflict, emotion and characters who probably want more than just a quick hook-up. But when desire takes over, these creatures don't hold back, they are intense, devoted, and they know exactly how to make you forget your own name.
Expect claiming marks, protective possession, fated mates, size differences, primal need, reverse harem and pleasures that borders on overwhelming, and supernatural stamina that doesn't quit.
️Not for you if: you prefer things slow and gentle, or if the idea of non-human lovers doesn't appeal.
Perfect for you if: you've always wondered what it would be like to be wanted by something powerful, to be claimed by someone who'll never let go, to find out if monsters really are better in bed.

Robert Aickman. He called his stories "strange stories," not horror, and that's key. The supernatural in an Aickman tale is often unresolved and deeply puzzling. 'The Hospice' or 'The Swords' leave you with a profound sense of disquiet, but you'd be hard-pressed to explain exactly what happened.
The horror is in the ambiguity, the feeling that reality's rules have been quietly suspended. It's an acquired taste, but for fans who find the unknown far scarier than any monster, Aickman is the ultimate, essential author. He'll haunt the edges of your mind.
