Honestly, my go-to for pure, sweet, first-love-in-college feelings isn't a novel at all—it's certain manga and manhwa. The tropes are executed with such a dedicated, visual flair that it often satisfies the itch better. The Indian setting is missing, of course, but the core emotions of discovering love while navigating a new academic world are universal. Sometimes you just want that iconic 'confession under the cherry blossoms' scene, even if the blossoms are, you know, not there.
I keep a dedicated Goodreads shelf for this trope. The ones that stay on it are there because of the side characters. A strong, witty friend group, a grumpy-but-caring professor, a chaotic hostel warden—these characters make the college world feel lived-in. If the protagonists are only ever interacting with each other, the setting feels like a cardboard backdrop. The best books make you wish you could hang out with the entire cast.
The male POV in these stories is often lacking. Either the guy is a cipher—brooding and mysterious—or a stereotypical 'player with a heart of gold.' I'd love to read a college romance entirely from the male perspective, where we see his nervousness, his academic pressures, his genuine confusion about his feelings, and his fear of rejection. Making him a fully realized character, not just a romantic plot device, would elevate so many of these narratives.
The billionaire trope has infected this genre too, and I'm tired of it. Not every male lead in an Indian college romance needs to be a secretly rich heir driving a Lamborghini to class. It completely ruins the relatability. I want stories about broke students sharing a plate of samosas, worrying about placement interviews, and falling in love in the library. That economic reality is a huge part of the Indian college experience, and glossing over it with fantasy wealth feels like a cop-out.

Oladele Anjola is an 100lvl student of Computer Science who just got admitted into Federal University of Technology, otherwise known as FUTA. She's extremely reserved and a big introvert. Although beautiful and intelligent, she has zero social skills. Adeleke Kolawole is your typical one of the most popular guys at FUTA. Cute, tall, handsome and brilliant and has more than half of the female population running after him. But Kola is the second definition of being snubbish and icy. He barely has friends and keeps to himself. Jola is totally smitten by Kola on their meeting and for the first time in Kola's life, he has a girl in his head. No matter how hard he tries to get her out of his head, she wouldn't budge, its not like he wanted her out of his head though. And so, an interesting love story starts. What will happen when Jola discovers that her very first friend in FUTA, Fisayo also has a huge crush on Kola. Will she give him up for friendship or give up her friendship for Kola. Its truly an hard decision, but sometimes before anyone else, we should come first.
I keep a dedicated shelf for my 'comfort re-reads'—books I read when I'm stressed. Half of them are these exact kinds of Indian campus romances. They're predictable in the best way. I know the friends will have a fallout in the third act and reconcile by the end. I know the couple will get together. It's like visiting old friends. The specific details of college life—the awful canteen coffee, the stolen Wi-Fi, the festival preparations—are what make them so re-readable. They're a time capsule of a very specific feeling.
I genuinely think the peak of the Indian college romance novel was in the late 2000s/early 2010s with the rise of Chetan Bhagat, Ravinder Singh, and Durjoy Datta. That era captured a specific moment of economic optimism and the explosion of English-language pop culture among urban youth. The college in those stories was a gateway to a new, modern India. Today's college romances have to contend with different anxieties—job market saturation, social media performativity, different political tensions. I'm not sure the current crop of mainstream writers has fully crystallized that new atmosphere yet.
Honestly, just go to the 'Romance' section of any Indian bookstore or e-store and look at the covers. If you see a couple standing in front of a college building, a library, or wearing sweatshirts with generic university logos, you've hit the jackpot. It's a whole subgenre with its own visual shorthand. The blurbs will usually involve phrases like 'their worlds collided in the corridors of...' or 'a love that began in the lecture halls of...'. It's almost a guarantee. Discovery is super easy because they market this angle so heavily.
A slightly different angle: check out Indian YA contemporary romance. Authors like Andaleeb Wajid or Sandhya Menon (though she writes primarily for the US diaspora) sometimes set stories in high school or early college. The emotional beats are similar—self-discovery, first love, social pressure—but with a younger voice that might feel fresh if you're tired of the typical 'New Adult' tropes.
