How Are James Patterson’S Alex Cross Books Ranked In Reading Order?

With so many Alex Cross thrillers, I'm totally lost. Is there a chronological list or suggested reading order that fans recommend for Patterson's series?

This series is so long that just keeping track of the reading order is a project in itself. I treat it like a long-running TV show with many seasons. So, I read a couple of books, then put the series aside and read something else for a while, and then come back to it. If I just read all the books in the series one after another, I would get tired of it fast, because the formula becomes so obvious.

The co-authored books in the series that followed were all well-integrated into the correct order. It was clear that a second writer was involved only by the cover. The quality and voice of the series as a whole were maintained throughout and it continued to read as Patterson’s work.

I've listed the books in publishing order, which is relatively straightforward. The bigger question is whether to include the Michael Bennett novels as they feature Alex Cross in a couple of the books. For the purist, these would not be considered part of the main Alex Cross series. However for the universe completist, these would be included in a hybrid list of all the Cross books in publication order. These novels are fun but ultimately non-revealing in terms of Alex’s personal journey.

Start with the order that interests you most! If you want to read the summary for book 12 first, then go for it! You can always come back to it later. Remember, reading for pleasure should not be restricted by any rigid rules. The books are designed to be read by anyone and the story can be pieced together in any order.

Movies with Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry are a separate entity from the rest of the films and don’t have to be watched in any particular order. The accompanying books are a completely different entity and offer a far more detailed insight into the story. The reading order for the novels is contained within itself and does not follow the films which have been released somewhat sporadically.

What is the complete list of James Patterson Private novels in order

5 Answers2026-07-25
I know about the 'Private' series of novels by James Patterson from ads in the back of his other novels, particularly the 'Women's Murder Club' series. A full-page ad for 'Private Vegas' or the latest 'Private' installment usually follows the conclusion of a 'Women's Murder Club' novel. It's a massive marketing machine. All of the preceding titles in the Private series are listed in the ads in order. So if you are in a bookstore, go to the back of any of the recent hardcovers by Patterson and you will typically find an ad for the Private series (listed as “The world’s most exclusive detective agency.”) in the center of the page. It’s somewhat of an analog method of listing but it works.

What order should I read the Veronica Mars books in?

7 Answers2025-06-02
Here is a neat list of all the novels so you can read them in the correct order: 1. 'Veronica Mars: The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line' (by Rob Thomas & Jennifer Graham). 2. 'Veronica Mars: Mr. Kiss and Tell' (by Rob Thomas & Jennifer Graham). 3. 'Veronica Mars: The Perennial Philosophy' (by Rob Thomas & Ed Brubaker). The third book has a different co-writer, but it's part of the same narrative. Read 'em in this order. That's the way to do it. Read these in the above numbered order. While there are no short stories, alternative perspectives or prequels to insert into the above list, the books do make for a fun and quick read that really captures the voice and spirit of the show. Enjoy.

What is the best reading order for lonesome dove books in order?

4 Answers2026-07-23
Read Lonesome Dove first, then read Streets of Laredo. The prequels are later optional reading for more background information on the characters. But reading them in chronological order would ruin the big surprises in Lonesome Dove and dilute the impact of the rest of the book and the emotional payoff of the ending. It is a simple book and overcomplicating it ruins it.

What are the most popular Robert Crais books ranked?

Do the audiobooks count too? I have them all read by James Daniels (with the exception of Elvis, which he read perfectly sardonicically, and Joe Pike, which he read beautifully understatedly). I think that The Watchman is even more of a gripping listen because of the wonderful way the action is rendered. I think that Suspect is a wonderful listen too, particularly in terms of the dog’s POV. For many modern readers, the ‘popularity’ of a book will often be tied to the quality of the audiobook version. So, for example, pacey and dialogue driven books like L.A. Requiem or The Watchman might actually get a higher ranking as audiobooks than some of the longer more slower burn print books. In the digital age of listening, a new listener may well start with the highest rated audiobook on Audible and then read reviews of other books by that same author to see if they are any good.

What order should I read spice and wolf books in?

5 Answers2025-09-03
While reading long series can be very tedious and we would like to provide our readers with ‘skip’ lists for the filler volumes, Spice and Wolf does not have any of those. Every book, even those that are almost like standalone stories for their economic adventures, always enhances the relationship between the characters and introduces a theme that will become very important later on. Every little conversation, every mistake, every small success builds the road the characters are walking together on. If you skip one brick, the road later on gets all bumpy and strange. So you have to read all the bricks in the order they were laid.

How should I start reading Tana French books in order?

8 Answers2026-07-22
Mystery fans who prefer strictly plot-driven stories may find that author Tana French’s novels are too character-driven. But for those willing to make the exception, ‘The Trespasser’ would be a good starting point as it is the most plot-oriented and even most procedural of the series, while still delivering her great writing and rich psychological insights about human nature.

Should I read the John Corey books in publication or story order?

4 Answers2026-07-25
This is a series, and typically I recommend reading them in story order. However, the first two books, Plum Island and The Lion's Game, are somewhat standalone, and then there are the later books about anti-terror, which are quite different from the middle books. In fact, the first half of the series has a strong feeling of being an NYPD detective series, and the second half has the feeling of a federal agent series. In fact, you could almost read them as two separate series.

What are the top romantic suspense books by Nora Roberts?

6 Answers2025-07-26
I have come to realize that Roberts writes about ‘normality’ being disrupted. The heroines of her best novels (The Obsession, The Liar, etc.) are usually trying to lead normal lives. They may be building a house, raising a child, starting a business. Then, suddenly, the past or a long hidden truth erupts into their lives. The romance is about finding safety in the arms of someone who loves them to return to a normal life. So Roberts’ top romantic suspense novels aren’t just about danger and romance. They are about themes of safety, home and reclaiming. And that’s what keeps me reading long after the plot twist is revealed. It’s satisfying to see a heroine confront whatever is threatening her and be rewarded with her happy ending.

What is the best judge dee book reading order?

7 Answers2025-08-23
Incidentally, I read a few of them out of order and it really doesn’t matter. Each is a self-contained mystery, or crime story. If you are following the Dee’s career as Magistrate then it is best to start with The Chinese Gold Murders, his first posting. The subsequent books can be read in publication order. The Chinese Lake Murders, The Chinese Nail Murders, The Haunted Monastery, The Red Pavilion and so on. More complex plots but inevitable as the author develops. The only one that really shouldn’t be read last is Poets and Murder as it is quite different from the rest of the series and involves a lot of Chinese poetry. On the other hand, one must note that the very last book of Dee’s, Poets and Murder, is in a different style, and largely depends on Chinese poetry. It would be best for new readers to avoid this one altogether.
