For fans of the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series, I'm debating which standalone or early crime novels to prioritize after recently finishing The Watchman.

Ranking his most popular novels, day job detective anchors ‘The Last Detective’ and tough guy detective novels like ‘L.A. Requiem’ and the opener for his many series, ‘The Monkey’s Raincoat,’ top the list of favorite Elroy novels. Fans of gritty and complex character-driven crime novels set in specific locations might also like The Devil’s Ice, the latest in a biker club series and a novel centered around a stolen shipment of merchandise which could lead to all-out war. The focus here is on the ins and outs of club politics and loyalty.

If you want to get started reading books by Robert Crais, then start with the first Elvis Cole book, ‘The Monkey’s Raincoat’. ‘L.A. Requiem’ is another great book in the series as it is one of the most emotional books that Crais has written. ‘The Watchman’ is Joe Pike at his best – all intense action as the main character tries to solve a mystery. ‘Suspect’ is also another great book and very different from the normal Elvis Cole and Joe Pike stories as it is a heartwarming and gritty story of a veteran and his dog.

Looking for something a little different? Check out Voodoo River for a jaunt to Louisiana and The First Rule to get a real look into the brutal world of Joe Pike. Robert Crais crafts characters to be brutal and still relatable. His blend of humor, suspense and emotion in all of his novels is unparalleled – read them all.

For me, no one writes better crime novels than Robert Crais. I list them below in reverse chronological order. First, L.A. Requiem, a masterful, highly charged and complex novel which goes back in time and explores the background to the on going character development of Joe Pike. Next is The Monkey’s Raincoat. A fantastic novel which introduces the lead character Elvis Cole in superb fashion. Then there’s The Watchman. Coke dependent, chaotic Joe Pike is at his very best in this cleverly constructed fast-paced chase from start to finish novel. The unique and totally different Suspect partnership-based novel follows in addition to the exquisitely harrowing The First Rule (another Joe Pike centered ‘Crais’ masterpiece which will have his fans seriously удовлетворен yet again).

If you are interested in a little humor in your suspense novels then ‘Voodoo River’ (also featuring Elvis Cole) is a great choice, set as it is in the mysterious state of Louisiana. Darker and more twisted is ‘Chasing Darkness’ which is another real page turner keeping you guessing until the end. Whatever your take on the novels of Robert Crais, he is a master of his genre and has a huge following of loyal fans who revel in the author’s ability to create well-developed characters in fast-paced plots.

The Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novels by Robert Crais are some of my favorite novels of all time. The first, The Monkey's Raincoat, is a great place to start with Crais and introduces readers to the main protagonist Elvis Cole, a smart, funny private investigator. Next up is L.A. Requiem, a great character study with a lot of plot twists and turns. Then there’s The Watchman, Pike-centric, and a real page turner. And then there’s Suspect, which is my favorite of the series so far. This novel pairs a guy with PTSD and his military dog. Crais does a great job of developing unique characters and churning out very suspenseful novels.

I reckon, for better or worse, that the book most loved by fans and critics alike is ‘L.A. Requiem’, in that it upgraded the entire series to something truly great. But when I say ‘popular’ I mean most read-friendly. In this regard, ‘The Watchman’ is Crais’ most accessible work, i.e. a great thriller that will be enjoyed by readers who know nothing of the L.A. Quartet before they start reading ‘The Watchman’. This leaves us with a ‘Depth’ champion in ‘The Forgotten Man’ and an ‘Accessibility’ champion in ‘Hostage’; and then there’s ‘Suspect’ which, in a manner of speaking, has both of these covered in significant measure. Analysis of this major body of work by Crais is particularly interesting as it was never written in repeating form yet all seem part of one interesting whole. And that’s because he never wrote the same book twice.

Are there any movies based on Robert Crais books?

The book is an extremely claustrophobic single location work – a house. The film is essentially the same story, but much more varied and it focuses on the police and the hostage negotiators, who were not in the book at all. They are on the outside, trying to negotiate with the main character in the book. So the film is really a cross-cutting action movie, whereas the book is a single location, psychological suspense novel. So in terms of what I would prefer, I would prefer the book. As a casual viewer of films, I can see why the filmmakers would want to go in this other direction, because they have different goals for different mediums. But the book is a very, very focused novel, and I like that about it.

What are the top romantic suspense books by Nora Roberts?

6 Answers2025-07-26
I have come to realize that Roberts writes about ‘normality’ being disrupted. The heroines of her best novels (The Obsession, The Liar, etc.) are usually trying to lead normal lives. They may be building a house, raising a child, starting a business. Then, suddenly, the past or a long hidden truth erupts into their lives. The romance is about finding safety in the arms of someone who loves them to return to a normal life. So Roberts’ top romantic suspense novels aren’t just about danger and romance. They are about themes of safety, home and reclaiming. And that’s what keeps me reading long after the plot twist is revealed. It’s satisfying to see a heroine confront whatever is threatening her and be rewarded with her happy ending.

How are James Patterson’s Alex Cross books ranked in reading order?

7 Answers2026-07-25
In the inside of every Alex Cross book, there is a copyright page that lists all of the previous titles in the series in order. It’s a low-tech, foolproof way to get all of the Alex Cross books in order. Just pick up any of the books and look at the copyright page inside. It’s even better than having the books on line because you don’t need to have any internet connection.

What is the most popular Mills & Boon book series?

I am also a huge fan of Mills & Boon’s ‘Desire’ series which is a very popular line of theirs. The books in this series are very intense, emotional and even erotic. The settings are usually very glamorous and the books follow the very intense relationships of the main characters. There are many titles in this series but I’ve listed a couple of examples such as ‘The Billionaire’s Secret Child’ by Jackie Ashenden and ‘The Spaniard’s Pregnant Bride’ by Maisey Yates. If you are after something a little sweeter then you can always opt for the Cherish series by Mills & Boon, which incorporates some of the most emotional romances available, with an emphasis on the romance itself, rather than peripheral issues. Titles like The Prince’s Convenient Bride by Marion Lennox and The Single Dad’s Holiday Proposal by Susan Meier are two examples of Cherish books available, all of which evoke feelings of warmth and love.

Which top thriller reads have the highest Goodreads ratings?

9 Answers2025-05-14
A Thriller! At first glance Michael Connelly’s novel “The Lincoln Lawyer” seems to be more of a legal drama but in Goodreads ratings it is categorized as a Thriller. It is a great Thriller story because of the cat-and-mouse game between Mickey Haller, a defense attorney, and his very evil client. The procedural details of the story are very interesting and there is a very good “franchise” twist in the plot. Connelly creates a tough, mobile world when Mickey Haller practices law out of the back of his car. It is well-written, lean and highly realistic. This is not a ‘suspense’ novel in the sense of a lot of jump-scared-type scenes. Rather, it is a slow developing dread at what has been going on and how he was manipulated, followed by the intricacies of the law as Haller searches for a way out of the trap set for him.

What are the popular book themes in September?

The new young adult is fixated on dark academia – and here it is again, with a twist: supernatural mystery and intrigue at a boarding school where the students uncover dark secrets of murders and disappearances, linked to the school’s black past and mysterious, ancient rituals. Above all this is a story about knowledge at any price and the corrupting influence of isolated, elite environments. There is plenty of space for friendship, rivalry and even betrayal. Naturally, a romantic storyline runs alongside the main mystery, but this is often complicated and intertwined with the larger narrative. This is a strongly aesthetic novel, full of atmosphere and dominated by a vintage look: think candlelight, tweed, rain on rough cobblestones, Latin phrases. And this is why September is the perfect month for this kind of story: it frames the start of the school year in all its anticipatory angst and even bliss. It’s a powerful form of escapism – especially in an era of stressful academic environments and of social media’s feverish pursuit of the perfect image.

What are the best romance crime novels of all time?

3 Answers2025-08-22
Why choose a romance crime novel? For starters, ‘In the Woods’ by Tana French is a fantastic choice of romance crime novel. The desire between detectives Rob Ryan and Cassie Maddox is as compelling as the murder of a young child that they are trying to solve. Then there’s ‘The Wife Between Us’ by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, another twisty and addictive love story. Add historical twist to the mix by grabbing ‘The Alienist’ by Caleb Carr, a chilling 19th century mystery set in New York that has subtle undertones of romance. Without exception the books of crime listed here show that even when you’re in the grip of the central plot of the book, love can creep in and keep you enthralled until the very end.

What is the complete list of James Patterson Private novels in order

5 Answers2026-07-25
I know about the 'Private' series of novels by James Patterson from ads in the back of his other novels, particularly the 'Women's Murder Club' series. A full-page ad for 'Private Vegas' or the latest 'Private' installment usually follows the conclusion of a 'Women's Murder Club' novel. It's a massive marketing machine. All of the preceding titles in the Private series are listed in the ads in order. So if you are in a bookstore, go to the back of any of the recent hardcovers by Patterson and you will typically find an ad for the Private series (listed as “The world’s most exclusive detective agency.”) in the center of the page. It’s somewhat of an analog method of listing but it works.

What is the most popular Mary Oliver book of all time?

9 Answers2025-06-06
Mary Oliver reading through this thread would probably just shake her head gently, perhaps with a small smile to her lips. For Oliver, writing was a means of paying attention, and her attention was a form of prayer. The fact that we are having this thread at all — debating which of her prayers is the “best” — is a testament to the profound degree to which her attention has resonated with our inattention. The most popular book of all is the one that stopped the most people in their tracks in order to get them to take a look and listen. And yes, they all do that.
