I'm overwhelmed by the Malice timeline order—where should new readers begin to grasp the Faithful and the Fallen world in sequence?

I’m waiting for the third 'Bloodsworn' book before I start that series. I hate waiting on cliffhangers! So my plan is to read the complete 'Faithful and the Fallen' and then the complete 'Of Blood and Bone' trilogy while I wait. By the time I’m done, maybe the final 'Bloodsworn' book will be out, and I can binge all three. That’s a strategy if you, like me, need closure.

Starting with the finished arcs eliminates the agony of waiting between books, which is a big plus for some readers.

Honestly, just flip a coin. Heads for 'Malice', tails for 'The Shadow of the Gods'. You’re going to end up reading both if you like his style anyway, so the starting point isn’t a life-altering decision. Both will give you a bloody, heartfelt, epic fantasy experience with fantastic arcs. The coin flip just adds a bit of fun to the decision.

If you’re still paralyzed after the flip, whatever you hoped it would land on while it was in the air is your real answer. Go with that.

Gwynne won me over. His descriptions are sharp and purposeful, especially in fight scenes. For a full arc, 'The Faithful and the Fallen' shows his growth in this area—by the last book, every word feels essential to the momentum. Starting there lets you see that refinement happen in real time.

If you start with his polished, later work, you might not appreciate how far he’s come. There’s a raw passion in the first quartet that’s really special, even if the prose is a little less streamlined initially.

The family dynamics in Gwynne’s books are top-tier. If found family, sibling bonds, and parental legacies are your catnip, then 'The Faithful and the Fallen' explores this over generations. Starting with 'Malice' lets you see these relationships form, fracture, and reforged across a massive war. The arc isn’t just about battles; it’s about what people fight for—their homes and loved ones.

The newer series also has strong found-family themes, but it’s more focused on a core band of warriors. For a broader, generational look, the original quartet is unmatched.

The sequel trilogy, 'Of Blood and Bone', is often overlooked as a starting point, but it’s designed to be accessible. It recaps enough of the old history while telling a new story. However, you’ll spoil the major outcomes of the first quartet if you ever plan to read it. The emotional weight of certain legacy characters won’t hit as hard.

So, if you’re sure you’ll only ever read one Gwynne series, 'A Time of Dread' is a solid, contained trilogy arc. But if there’s any chance you’ll dive into the whole universe, start at the true beginning with 'Malice' to preserve those surprises.

How do John Gwynne’s series connect and what order should I follow?

Is the prose in 'Malice' noticeably rougher than in Bloodsworn? I don’t want to start there if it’s a slog. I’ve been burned by debut novels before.

What is the best John Gwynne book to start with?

John Gwynne's books are like a feast for fantasy lovers, and if you're new to his work, I'd absolutely recommend starting with 'The Shadow of the Gods'. It's the first book in his Bloodsworn Saga, and it throws you right into a Norse-inspired world that's brutal, beautiful, and brimming with action. The characters are so vivid—Orka’s quest for vengeance, Elvar’s warrior ambitions, and Varg’s journey from outcast to fighter all weave together perfectly. I couldn’t put it down because of how immersive the combat scenes are—Gwynne’s background in reenactment fighting really shines through. If you enjoy gritty, character-driven stories with a mythic feel, this is the one. It’s also a bit more accessible than his earlier series, 'The Faithful and the Fallen', which is epic but denser. 'The Shadow of the Gods' feels like a fresh start, with tighter pacing and a world that’s easier to dive into. Plus, the audiobook narrated by Colin Mace is phenomenal—his gravelly voice fits the icy, blood-soaked setting perfectly. After this, you’ll probably binge the sequel, 'The Hunger of the Gods', and join the rest of us waiting impatiently for Book 3!

I see a lot of people saying to start with the Bloodsworn Saga because it's newer and maybe more accessible. I strongly disagree. Reading 'The Shadow of the Gods' first would rob you of the deep appreciation for how Gwynne's writing has evolved. You'd miss the foundational themes and the sheer scale he builds in the original quartet. Start at the beginning, with the classics.

Which John Carter book should I start with to follow John’s arc

Think about his relationship with Dejah Thoris. It’s the emotional core of his entire existence on Barsoom. That relationship begins, develops, and faces its ultimate test across the first three books. If you skip 'A Princess of Mars', you miss the iconic, sweeping romance that defines his motivation for everything else he does. You can’t follow his arc without following their love story from its first spark.

Which John Puller novel should I start with to follow the main arc?

My two cents: the 'main arc' isn't really the selling point. The selling point is John Puller solving crimes. Each book delivers that. The ongoing family drama is a subplot that adds spice. So, starting with the strongest standalone might be better. Many reviewers say 'The Forgotten' or 'The Escape' are the peaks of the series. Why not start at a peak? If you love it, you'll be motivated to read the others, even if they're slightly less thrilling. If you start with a weaker one, you might quit altogether.

Which John Milton book should I start with to follow the series?

Is it weird that I found 'Paradise Regained' more psychologically interesting? It's the temptation of Christ in the wilderness, so it's all dialogue and intellectual sparring. No big battles, just a quiet, tense duel of wits between Jesus and Satan. It shows a different side of Milton—more interior, more focused on steadfast conviction than grand action. It's often criticized as being less exciting, and it is, but it's also strangely compelling in its austerity. If you're into philosophical debates and character studies, it might be a more unique entry point than the more commonly recommended works.
