Just finished reading it for the second time and the character dynamics hit even harder. The central couple is Cassian and Elara. He's this morally bankrupt businessman with a past shrouded in violence, and she's the artist he becomes obsessed with, a character who initially seems fragile but has a spine of pure steel. Their push-and-pull is the engine of the whole book.

A character I found unexpectedly vital is Vincent, Cassian's right-hand man. He's not just muscle; he's the voice of a twisted conscience, often the one to point out when Cassian's obsession is crossing into real danger. Then there's Lydia, Elara's roommate, who provides the only glimpse of normalcy and whose fear for her friend grounds the story in a terrifying reality.

The book cleverly uses secondary characters as mirrors. You see Cassian's ruthlessness reflected in his business rival, and Elara's hidden strength echoed in her enigmatic mentor, a woman named Moira who only appears briefly but leaves a huge impression. They all serve to deepen the central, toxic bond.

Cassian, Elara, and the power imbalance between them. Everyone else feels like set dressing to me, just there to move their toxic dance along. Vincent and Lydia exist to give them someone to talk at, not with. The book lives or dies on whether you buy into those two central performances. For me, Cassian's brand of control grew repetitive, and Elara's resilience started to feel like a plot convenience after a while. The key characters are a concept, not fully realized people.

Okay, the obvious ones are Cassian and Elara. But honestly? I think the most key character is the city itself. The way the author describes the rain-slicked streets, the oppressive luxury of Cassian's penthouse, the claustrophobic feel of Elara's studio—it's a character that traps them both. It sets a mood that makes their twisted love story feel inevitable.

Within that, Cassian's driver, Silas, is a quiet standout. He barely speaks, but his presence is a constant, observing everything. He's the one who opens the car door, who witnesses arrivals and departures, and in a book about obsession, the silent witness holds a strange power. He knows where all the bodies are buried, metaphorically and perhaps literally.
