As for your question regarding the main characters of ‘Helpless’, I’ve assumed that Jae Joon and Jae Hee (the missing sibling of Jae Joon) would be good subjects of discussion as the search for Jae Hee is the backbone of the novel. Jae Joon is a single-minded person determined to search for his missing sister and as he delves deeper into her life, the calm exterior of the main character begins to crumble. And, of course, we have to talk about Jae Hee and how she was living her life until the day she disappeared. We can only experience her through the eyes and recollections of the main characters but we slowly come to realize that Jae Hee is a complex, multi-faceted and, what seems to be, somewhat troubled young girl who led a life so very different from what her family had imagined.

Other important characters are in the story as well. Kim Jung-hoon, the detective working on Jae Hee’s case, at first acts as an obstacle to Jae Joon’s search for his sister but eventually Jae Joon can count on him. Also, characters from Jae Hee’s hidden life, like her exploitative boyfriend as well as apathetic or even complicit acquaintances and other figures from the dark corners of her life are of utmost importance. These secondary characters, as they appear in the story to interact with Jae Joon, often in very hostile or even pitiful manner, sometimes even evasive, help create a sense of unease, of claustrophobia and oppressive atmosphere and thus help define ‘Helpless’ as more than a mere thriller.

What lingers with me long after I finished reading this book is the portrayal of the relationships between the characters. Their exploration of themes of guilt, responsibility and the boundaries of love for family members is amazing. Jae Joon’s search for his sister, and his transformation of views towards her with every new piece of information, is at the same time a search for his right to reclaim her. The detective’s search for justice in a flawed system, too, mirrors Jae Joon’s search. All the key characters are moving within the orbit of the absence at the center of the story. Thus, even though the plot is basically about how a mystery is solved, it is the relationships and the emotions between the characters that make it so powerful and so meaningful.

How does helpless ending resolve the conflict?

‘Helpless Ending’ stories resolve in a more realistic and non-deterministic way. Instead of plotting out a scenario to a victorious ending for the characters, the external circumstances are acknowledged by the characters for what they are, and the characters find a way to come to terms with them, however helpless they are. They may cease resisting the forces that control them and find a way to exist within their limitations. These are bittersweet stories of resignation, but of a peaceful kind, the kind of peace reached after a long and exhausting struggle. Rather than being tied up with a bow, the central tension is dissolved in order to be concluded. The frenzy of struggling to resist gives way to a quiet moment of understanding, as the reader looks at the situation with the protagonist for the first time and understands. The struggle is over. The conflict has ceased. And that can be a very hollow and very unpleasant feeling, yet at the same time a very relieving one. The similarity to many real life situations, where some tangles cannot be undone but must be carried in a different way, is part of what makes this kind of ending successful. The narrative ultimately achieves satisfaction because we get to witness the moment of transcendence, and that moment is sufficiently concrete to carry its own weight. We see the protagonist walking away from a long debated battlefield, or sitting quietly in the smoldering remains of it, his face serene. It’s a conclusion that has the weight of reality to it, and not the weight of fiction.

The two main characters of the story are Dae-ho and his aunt Mi-na. The other secondary characters in the story are Su-ah, the tutor, and Yoo-jin, the friend’s sister. The story falls apart if Mi-na had not made the specific decision to teach Dae-ho about the relationships of adults in such a concrete way. The other characters only add complexity to the initial teacher-student relationship.

Who are the main characters in Any Human Heart?

Just finished this and I have to say the only thing I remember is the feeling of reading another person’s life and how that life had all the ups and downs that any other person’s would. As for a list of characters: Freya is a dream that he once had. Lottie is a chair that he sat in for years and became very comfortable in. Stella is a brief, but very warm patch of sun. Peter Scabius is a annoying pebble in his shoe that he can never seem to shake out of. They are all important in their own right, but none as important as the book is set within the confines of one man’s mind. So even though historical events are going on all around him, they are basically background noise to the main event which is Logan’s life. What is most interesting is that there are really three main characters and they are all versions of one man at different stages of his life: his youth, his middle age and his old age. All three are named Logan.

Who are the key characters in Haalim by Nimra Ahmed?

The main characters in this story are Haalim the artist, Zoha his neighbor, and his parents. The majority of the story takes place between the four of them and brings to light the many unsaid words between Haalim and Zoha. This is a quiet book about loud inner conflicts and the artist has created wonderful characters to bring this to life.

Who are the key characters in Ember Book and their roles?

I wrote Kaelen as the heart of our trio. Aris is, without a doubt, the brain. And Lyra? Well, she is the sharp knife in the dark. The rest of our friends – Vorlan, Silas, Elara – are the environment in which the three of them exist. It is the society, the relationships that they have with each other, that gives the actions of the three above meaning. The heart. The brain. The knife. That is the core of our story and I have not spent nearly as much time developing the magic system as I have these three characters. They are the true engine of the book.

This book features an elite soldier, and a high-ranking political officer who is forced into a conflict with the soldier. The officer has been tasked by her government to execute the soldier for treason. However, the soldier is trying to reveal the treasonous conspiracy that has falsely accused him of treason. I just started reading another book with a somewhat different but very compelling central conflict, When The Sky Falls. In this book, two rival agents are forced to work together as their world begins to fall apart. They are natural enemies who are forced to work together to survive as their world collapses. The tense pressure of their situation creates some very compelling interactions between the two agents.

What are the key sailor moon characteristics of each character?

Now as an adult, watching this show, I have come to realize a lot of characteristics around romance. For one, Usagi and Mamoru have a huge age and maturity difference. They kind of gloss over this aspect in the series but it would be very apparent if they were in real life. Then there’s Makoto who wants a boyfriend so badly because of his past and how he abandoned his family. Minako on the other hand wants to be an idol so badly but has to go to school and grow up. And then there’s Rei who is initially very jealous in the series of Mamoru and Usagi. I think the show portrays these romantic ideals but shows the anxiety, the miscommunication, and the growth needed to make these kinds of relationships work. It’s more real and complex than people give it credit for.

Who are the main characters in Dreams of Desire?

For me, the dual protagonists were Elara and Kaelen. The way their initial enemies turned into enemies-turned-allies, and possibly even more than that, was at the heart of the story. Elara is a book-smart, naive dreamer who has no idea how to cope in the brutal politics of the dream world, while Kaelen is a cynical harden veteran, full of survivor’s guilt. It was really wonderful to see Elara slowly soften Kaelen up, and to see Kaelen slowly temper Elara’s ideals and help her to see reality. The dialogue between them was all wonderful, really – very, very sharp, with lots of subtext, and I could really see their relationship grow by brick, slowly but painfully. The rest of the cast of characters played around the edges of the two, and really, the story lived and died on the readership of these two characters. I fully believed in them both.

How does The Things We Never Say end, and who are the key characters?

There's no one wealthy, no fairy-tale wrap-ups to their pasts. And, while the evil past is likely the greatest obstacle that the characters in this story faced, it's not necessarily defeated by the end of the novel either. Rather, the characters have come to terms with their own personal struggles within the story. Their greatest enemy was their own emotion and inner turmoil. These characters, in the end, found victory. Maggie finally allows herself to be vulnerable enough to acknowledge her son. Sarah has finally found her place and understand her family's past. These are quiet victories and not necessarily what one would expect from a book such as this, especially not from the plot. However, the ending is incredibly satisfying in terms of the realistic arcs of the characters within the novel. It's not an easy task to make these kinds of choices as a writer, but this one is a masterstroke. The ending prioritizes the true and realistic emotional journeys of the characters and eschews contrived plot structures in favor of more meaningful territory.

Who are the main characters in The Road to Tender Hearts?

Most books with a lot of main characters have some that you can’t stand but you read their chapters anyway because they serve a purpose in the story. Not this book. I never felt that I had to finish a chapter by a particular main character in order to get back to another. Each perspective was necessary and added a crucial section to the story as a whole. Sometimes I was angry with a character and their choices, especially early on with Mei. However, I could always see why she had made the choice that she had. This is truly great character writing: the ability to make the reader like and even feel sorry for all of the characters, even when they make poor choices and the reader is upset with them.
