I love how Amazon keeps expanding features like audiobook support. The models that currently support audiobook playback include the Kindle Oasis (all generations), Kindle Paperwhite (10th generation and later), and Kindle (8th generation and later). These devices pair seamlessly with Bluetooth headphones or speakers, making it super convenient to switch between reading and listening.
The Kindle Oasis is my personal favorite for audiobooks because of its premium build and immersive reading experience. The Paperwhite is a great mid-range option, especially the latest versions with adjustable warm light. The basic Kindle model also supports audiobooks, though it lacks some of the advanced features. Remember, you'll need an Audible subscription or purchased audiobooks to take advantage of this feature. The Kindle app on smartphones also supports audiobooks, but it's not quite the same as using a dedicated e-reader.

I can tell you that not all Kindle Paperwhite models support audiobooks. The feature was introduced with the 10th generation Kindle Paperwhite (2018) and later models, but only if you pair them with Bluetooth headphones or speakers since they lack a 3.5mm audio jack. The base models before that, like the 7th or 8th gen, don’t have audio support at all.
If you’re eyeing audiobooks, the newer Paperwhite (11th gen, 2021) is a solid choice—it’s waterproof, has a bigger screen, and supports Audible seamlessly. Just keep in mind you’ll need a Bluetooth device to listen. Older models might frustrate you if audio is a priority, so always check the specs before buying. I learned this the hard way after assuming my older Paperwhite could handle Audible—it couldn’t.

I know firsthand that not all models support Google Play out of the box. The ones that do are usually the newer releases. For example, the Kindle Fire HD 10 (9th generation and later) and the Fire HD 8 (10th generation and later) can sideload Google Play with some effort. It involves downloading a few APK files and installing them in the right order. I did this on my Fire HD 10, and it works perfectly. Older models like the Fire 7 or earlier HD 8 versions don’t handle it as smoothly, if at all. If you’re into apps like YouTube or Gmail, sticking to the newer models is the way to go.

the models that support audiobooks are a game-changer for multitaskers. The Kindle Oasis and Kindle Paperwhite (10th and 11th gen) both have Audible integration, so you can switch between reading and listening seamlessly. My favorite is the Oasis because of its ergonomic design and warm light, making it comfy for long sessions. The basic Kindle doesn’t support audiobooks, which is a bummer, but the Paperwhite is a solid mid-range option with waterproofing—great for poolside listening. Bluetooth pairing is smooth, and the battery life doesn’t take a huge hit even with audiobooks running.

Back when I got my first Kindle, the Kindle Keyboard (3rd gen), it felt like the perfect size—compact enough to slip into a jacket pocket but with a screen big enough to read comfortably. Comparing it to my friend's latest Kindle Paperwhite, the difference is noticeable. The newer models are slightly taller and wider, but what really stands out is how much thinner they've become. The bezels shrank over time too, making the screen feel more expansive without drastically increasing the device's footprint.
Honestly, the older Kindles had a charm with their physical keyboards or chunky navigation buttons, but the modern ones prioritize screen real estate. If you're someone who reads mostly at home, the size upgrade might not matter much. But for travelers, that extra half-inch in height can make or break bag space. I still keep my old Kindle around for nostalgia—and because it fits perfectly in my car's glove compartment!

I can confirm that Kindles do support Audible audiobooks, but with some limitations. Only certain Kindle models, like the Kindle Oasis and Kindle Paperwhite, have built-in Audible support. You can easily pair Bluetooth headphones or speakers to listen to your audiobooks seamlessly.
One thing to note is that not all Kindle e-readers have this feature. The basic Kindle models don’t support Audible playback, so you’d need to use the Audible app on a smartphone or tablet instead. If you’re an audiobook lover, it’s worth investing in a Kindle that supports Audible, as it makes switching between reading and listening incredibly convenient. The Whispersync feature is a game-changer, allowing you to pick up right where you left off, whether you’ve been reading or listening.

For those with older models: all is not lost. You can still listen to your Audible books on your phone and read on your Kindle. The Whispersync sync will still work between the two devices. You just can't play the audio from the Kindle itself.
