Worth it? Depends. If your definition of suspense is strictly about the mystery of the virus or the outside world, maybe not. The quarantine itself is more a pressure cooker for character drama than a puzzle to be solved. The suspense is interpersonal: betrayals, shifting alliances, secrets from the past.
I found that angle surprisingly effective because it’s character-driven suspense. You’re constantly guessing who you can trust, which of the kings is playing the longest game, what the heroine is really capable of. It’s less about jump scares and more about that low-grade anxiety of social uncertainty, amplified by isolation. The writing’s propulsive enough that I finished it in two sittings, driven by that ‘what happens next’ urge, even if the ‘next’ was often a emotional confrontation rather than a plot revelation.
The book opens with a literally sick premise—a virus locks down an elite academy—that pulled me in expecting some 'Lord of the Flies' meets medical thriller vibes. Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti know how to build that initial dread, the kind that makes you check the door’s locked. The suspense comes from the social unraveling as much as the pathogen; who turns cruel under pressure, who hides secrets, that sort of thing.
Where it lost me a bit was the pivot toward the bully romance elements. If you’re here purely for a tight, creeping dread, the intense focus on the dynamics between the female lead and the ‘kings’ can feel like the narrative throttle gets eased. The suspense takes a backseat to relationship power plays for long stretches. It’s a mash-up, so your mileage depends on whether you want the suspense thread woven with a heavy dose of dark romance. For a pure suspense fan, those sections might test your patience, but the high-stakes setup and the authors’ knack for cliffhangers mean the tension never fully dissipates.
As a suspense reader, I’d say manage expectations. It’s not a thriller in a traditional sense. The quarantine setting creates a tense atmosphere, but the core tension is romantic and power-based. The ‘worth it’ factor hinges on whether you enjoy suspense as a seasoning in a dark academia romance, rather than the main course. The book uses suspense tropes to service a different genre. It’s gripping, but in a melodramatic, addictive way that might not satisfy someone looking for a more conventional, plot-twist driven mystery.

Selected, Laurent's Lab"
The invitation came several days later, after I had given up all hope of ever earning an internship.
An invitation to work for the King of Vampires. The most revered vampire in all of Moon City, and the only vampire still linked to Royal blood.
~~~~~
When Dalia was accepted to work in Laurent's Inc, she didn't expect to ever meet the King of Vampires, not until she finds that the gorgeous, cocky, ancient vampire had been the blue eyed tormentor of her wet dreams.
The most ruthless of all vampires in Moon City, Jacob St. Laurent didn't get the title "King of Vampires" by being easily swayed or by falling in love. He would do anything in his power not to see that happen.
But fate always had a way of being a b*tch
The kingdom of Valdris has survived a thousand years through blood and fear, ruled by kings who never flinched and never forgave. Corvin, the current ruler, is no different. He is beautiful in a dangerous way, undefeated in battle, and feared by every soul who speaks his name. He has never wanted anything he could not take. Until the spy.
On the eve of his coronation anniversary, a fox is discovered inside the inner palace. It shifts into a young man named Elowen, a shifter from the eastern wildlands who carries ancient magic and a smile sharp enough to cut. By every law, he should be executed. Instead, Corvin makes a shocking decision and claims the spy as his personal “pet,” a living trophy meant to remind the world of his power.
Elowen, however, did not end up in the palace by accident. He was sent to infiltrate Corvin’s court, earn the king’s trust, and destroy him from within. What he did not anticipate was the man beneath the crown. Corvin is the one person who sees through his lies, challenges him in unexpected ways, and becomes difficult to resist.
As influence shifts and their loyalties blur, desire turns into a weapon neither man can fully control. Corvin’s Crown Sight cannot read Elowen’s heart, and Elowen cannot decide whether the king is his target or greatest weakness.
War brews at the borders, treachery spreads within the palace walls, and their growing connection becomes the most dangerous secret in Valdris. If Corvin’s court uncovers the truth, he could lose his throne. If Elowen’s people discover his feelings for the man he was sent to kill, he may never escape alive. Their bond threatens the kingdom, and the decision they face could set Valdris on fire.
*Book Two in the King's Possession series - Read Book One (King's Possession) before proceeding with this novel!*
The book surprised me, honestly. From the title and cover I expected a pretty standard enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance with some action beats, but the suspense element is actually handled with a lot more care than that. It’ s not just about ‘will they or won’t they kiss.’ The political intrigue within the werewolf kingdom and the assassin’s mysterious employer create this genuine, page-turning tension about who is manipulating whom. You’re constantly second-guessing allegiances.
Where it really succeeds for suspense fans is the internal conflict of the main assassin character. Their mission is clear, but the closer they get to the Alpha, the more the intel seems off, and the narration does a great job of making you feel that creeping dread of a setup. It’s less about jump scares and more about a sustained, paranoid atmosphere. The final act has a twist I genuinely didn’t see coming, which recontextualizes a lot of the earlier unease. If you go in expecting a taut, paranolitical thriller with a romantic subplot rather than a romance with some suspense sprinkled on top, you’ll probably enjoy it a lot more.
