This character design change is really effective. Kirishima’s hair down is really effective at making him look really endearing and relatable. As opposed to his usual spiked up red hair which denotes energy and determination, his hair down makes him look sort of approachable and a bit tired. Like he’s off-duty and we can see him without his guard down. It makes him really endearing and relatable.

And that’s also the reason why I think it’s very important to mention the cultural context of this design. Hair in anime is usually used to represent a character’s personality, much like hair colors or hair styles in the real world are associated with certain personality traits. Red hair and spiky hair is usually associated with a very fiery spirit. And smooth hair, loose hair is associated with calmness, or even with something that this person is hiding. And Kirishima’s design plays very well with these clichés. The ‘hair down’ look is not just a funny change to his usual appearance, it can also be used as a storytelling tool to give us a glimpse into his past self before he became the ‘unbreakable’ person he is today. And it’s quiet, it’s subtle, it’s so beautiful.

The down hair of Kirishima is cute because it is unexpected. The guy is all rough and tough all the time, and then you see a picture of him with his hair down and you’re all “Who is that?”. It’s a great example of the gap moe. The normal version of the character is all armor all the time, hair up and spiky, but this picture of him with his hair down shows a much more intimate version of the guy. Not only is it cute, but it looks really good on him too. In fact, it even makes him look really. The change in hair brings out a softer side of his face and makes him more relatable. It shows that there’s more to the character of “Red Riot” than just his tough exterior. He’s also Eijirou, and that duality is everything.

Kirishima from ‘My Hero Academia’ with his hair down is one of those rare character designs that completely flips your expectations of who he is as a character. In general he looks like a hard-edged guy with spiky hair, and he even is a hero with the persona ‘Unbreakable’. But when his hair is down, it completely reveals a softer, more vulnerable side of the character. This is actually pretty endearing and even makes him look somewhat charming as a boy-next-door sort of character. The fandom lost it when this scene was shown, and I can definitely see why. These moments where the character shows their human side are some of the best moments of a character.

A lot of people enjoy characters who go against their typical personality. Since Kirishima’s hair is usually a representation of his personality it’s really interesting to see it in a relaxed form. The hair in this scene isn’t really wild or unyielding. Instead it frames his face in a relaxed style. The animators did an excellent job in this scene. A small wave in his hair is a big change from his typical hairstyle and it speaks volumes to his character. As a result of this scene there was a lot of fanart made of this version of Kirishima.
