Ugh, PDF hunts for niche novels are the worst! I had a similar problem last year with ‘Kiss of the Basilisk’ (a relatively minor novel). I found “The Kiss of the Basilisk” by long time ago and it’s a really rare book (even more than usual for rare books). Most of rare books are already hard to find in physical form, but PDFs are even rarer. As far as I know, there is no official PDF version of “The Kiss of the Basilisk” available for download. Most of the old, rare, obscure books were not digitized for years until they gained cult status or similar. There are probably some rare PDF copies uploaded by individuals on various, shady websites and Services, but as I said, I will not post any links to such materials here. Instead, you can try to search for used bookstores that sell such books (even in used condition), as well as various online forums where people trade their used copies of such books. I managed to find a copy of this book after months of searching online, in all sorts of dusty corners of the Net. And I can tell you that I enjoy my worn, battered paperback of this book much more than I would have enjoyed any low-quality PDF copy of it.

Some rare books are even digitized by passionate people who like to rescue obscure gems. Has anyone ever spent hours searching for a book that is nowhere to be found? No PDFs. But audiobooks are a better way to read this anyway. I love the Narrator's Name reading the main character so perfectly with her dry wit, and the basilisk has this weirdly resonant voice that I hadn’t even gotten on page in my first read-through. (This is a great way to ‘re-read’ a book – I’ve done this three times already just because the audio performance is so different from the text). Audible, Spotify, your library’s audiobooks – all of these are better than a PDF of the text. Sometimes the best solution to your file-type problems is just to consume the story in a different way.

Aside from the weird formatting, is the novel actually any good? So far all this talk of it has convinced me to be highly skeptical. The fact that a supposedly brilliant novel is not readily available in stores would seem to me to suggest that perhaps it is not as brilliant as others claim. I’ve found that once a book or game becomes highly desired, all manner of poor quality copies appear on the market. But I wouldn’t know. I’d read some professional reviews of it on reputable sites first. Or perhaps the Kindle sample would give you an idea of whether it’s worth the hassle of tracking down a copy. My greatest fear is that after all the time and effort I put into getting a long out of print game or book, it will be really terrible. This is how I’ve felt on more than one occasion.

It's clear that the publisher's digital strategy is being run by someone who last looked at what was going on in the world of digital publishing in 2012. So, no PDF available, a book might not be available in your region on some of the platforms where it is for sale, and a huge opportunity is being missed by not releasing the book DRM-free on stores like Google Play Books. I and others have tweeted at the publisher about this, but it's all been largely ignored. In a genre that is popular with highly passionate and technologically-aware fans, this is all a bit strange. It would almost suggest that the publisher didn't want the book to be successful, which would be an odd business model. Or perhaps print is just so very strong in this market that they don't care about digital at all? Unlikely, but there you have it.

Most fans of these types of books become very familiar with various pieces of software used to convert from one format to another, as well as with regional licensing restrictions and various ways to import books published abroad. All of this is to say that it is sort of a rite of passage or a badge of honor for people who read this type of book to be able to pretend to make sense of all of this in order to tell other people how to find their own copies of the book. For example, "Oh, you want to read that? Good luck. You'll need to set up a Japanese Amazon account and use a VPN." It's all pretty ridiculous but also sort of connects us in our desperation. For instance, I’m told that the German translation is currently being issued as a limited-edition PDF via a small publisher, whereas the English original remains firmly locked down. (The localized format in which titles are issued can even vary from country to country, and be the decision of the local license holder.) For most readers, it’s unlikely to make much difference – but if you’re bilingual, it’s possible that checking the version in another language might clarify a point or two currently causing confusion online amongst readers from around the world.
