Ugh, finding free versions of niche books is a rabbit hole that I tried to avoid when searching for a free PDF version of ‘Just the Tip’ last year. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find a legitimate free version of the book. I ended up downloading the book through my library’s app (Libby) instead – which has saved my wallet on many occasions. Buying used copies of books can be hit or miss too, but you might find some gems in thrift stores or through online swaps. Supporting the creators of your favorite books is definitely more worth it than taking a risk on sketchy downloads.

'Just the Tip' is another one of those indie books that I’d be interested to read – the kind of work that most people have never heard of and are distributed freely as PDFs (usually through the author’s website). After a search around various book discussion forums and fan sites for this book, it appears to not be freely available as a PDF (through the author or mainstream distributor). Most places where it is discussed online seem to think that it is sold as a title (possibly even e-book only) – although, there are always those dodgy websites that apparently offer you a ‘free’ copy of paid-for work as a PDF (which I avoid like the plague).

However, if you're looking for something similar then there are plenty of other free short stories and web novels on sites such as Wattpad or Royal Road that also explore unconventional themes. Most of these stories are free to read and a treasure trove of bizarre, heart-warming and hilarious stories waiting to be discovered.

I haven’t found a free PDF version of ‘Just the Tip’ but there is a paid ebook and a paperback version available. If the story does interest you then perhaps check out the author’s social media account as they have been known to give away free copies or offer them at reduced price for a limited time. A freebie to read while you can save up for the real version!

I was asked by a friend of mine a while back to see if I could find out if “Just the Tip” by Karen Osborne was available for free somewhere. “Just the Tip” is one of those books that appears to be published by a small press and not quite well enough known to be made freely available on a large scale but too well known to be allowed to disappear without trace. There is no mention of a free edition on the author’s website and the book is apparently available only as a paid eBook from Amazon/Kobo. Experimental fiction is a field that I would recommend to readers of “Just the Tip” and, in sample/freebie form, to readers of “This Is How You Lose the Time War” and “Cat Pictures Please” (both of which were given away as free eBooks at some point). You might find plenty more along similar lines in your search for this one title.

I’m also having trouble locating a PDF copy of When She Tempts for my Kindle. While the book is available at some online retailers, I have not found it listed at major retailers, and the few links to PDF copies that I have found will download a possible virus to my computer. I hope the author will consider making this book available for download at a later time. Until then, I will have to wait and hope that the book is worth reading. I devoured the author’s sample chapters and enjoyed the tension that was written into them – it was like a chef’s kiss of excellent writing. Stick to the author’s official channels to purchase and download this book.

Looking for free PDFs of manga can be quite of an adventure. I personally would not recommend randomly clicking on links to download “The Classmate” for free. There are way too many scam links and the risk of malware is too high. On the other hand there are many aggregator websites for manga that host fan-made translations of manga, most of which are illegal but often gray. If you are into physical copies of manga, second-hand bookstores and comic shops may well have copies for sale at low prices. I found a battered copy of ‘The Classmate’ for the modest sum of $3 – it was one of those days!

A funny story, though. I searched for a free PDF of ‘The Boy in the Striped Pajamas’ graphic novel and what I got was a Google search result that appeared to link to a free PDF. However, I now know that it was actually a scam website that contained malware. I have since discovered that ‘The Boy in the Striped Pajamas’ graphic novel is actually a premium title published by Scholastic in their catalog of high-end historical books. Even though I can provide you with a preview of the graphic novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas graphic novel is worth every penny of the price that I paid for it. The historical content is so well written and the way in which the author uses the graphic novel format to tell the story of a group of children trying to survive WWII is so compelling that, even in print, it gives hair-raising accounts of the kids outsmarting the soldiers to get to the other side of the camp.

Nope! Either Ebook or Paperback is fine. The paperback is nice to add to your collection of books should you wish to add this to your collection. The story is like a secret episode. It covers the time between key points in the final season and follows Jaq on her solo missions, giving us a glimpse into her turmoil and alone time. The writing is very crisp and doesn’t pull any punches. Very realistic and gritty, just like the TV Show. The ebook is easier to access straight away, I wouldn’t recommend PDFs as most ebook apps offer just as good portability. Either way, the content within is top notch so remove the hassle and buy direct from the source.

For searching for free PDFs of books like ‘All the Dead Lie Down’ (a book I’m currently researching for work with academic resources), I like to check the usual ‘formal channels’ first. This would include checking if the book is available through interlibrary loan systems and on institutional repositories. JSTOR, University Presses and some book chapters are also available for free. Looking up the book’s DOI and/or ISBN number on the publishers’ website or searching the book’s ISBN number on library catalogs also often helps to clarify access rights. As authors deposit preprints of their work, as well as permitted versions under their publisher’s green open access policy, in repositories such as arXiv,doaj or researchgate, emailing the author directly is surprisingly often granted. This is in addition to sites such as piratebay that host illegal copies of work. Whilst I steer clear of these sites for legal reasons, it is also that one never knows the quality of the illegal copy in terms of integrity of the file. But, given the ethics involved, taking the extra time to find a legitimate copy, which in the end is usually readable anyway, is well worth it.

I shall play devils advocate here. I get that people don’t want to pay for entertainment, especially with so much choice available these days. Okay, so a really long, really dense book in a genre that you have not read before would be best to try before buying. Library samples aren’t always long enough to get a proper feel for a really long book. Waiting lists for books in libraries can be very long. But. That industry that brings you these novels is fragile. Every lost sale is a loss for all of us. Perhaps wait for a sale and set aside a little each week for your novels. It’s not too hard to budget for them and the delay of a few days to purchase a novel will be worth it for the better experience you’ll have with the novel. And that is what you want.

Ahah, this is so funny. I totally forgot I had asked that question last year. ‘When It's Real’ is one of those books I would totally re-read so yeah, PDF would be awesome. Unfortunately, there is no PDF for ‘When It's Real’, but we do have the Kindle version which is super flexible. You can read it on any device with the free Kindle app, I read mine on my old Kobo using Adobe Digital Editions to sideload it. A tangential note: if you're really into fake-dating tropes (like I am), Erin Watt's other books (such as The Royals, a series of hers) are pretty great too. In the meantime, you can either go for e-books or hunt down used copies of When It's Real to get those lovely dog-eared pages.
