I'm in a book club, and we all used Libby to get 'Icebreaker' for our last meeting. It was hilarious comparing hold times. Some of us in different library districts got it weeks apart. We learned that having members in different library systems is a strategic advantage! We could share which library had the shortest wait. It became a team sport. So if you have friends or family in the same general region, compare notes. Their library might have a better digital allocation. It's a social way to tackle the waitlist problem. Plus, discussing the book while listening to the same audio performance adds another layer to the conversation.

I'm just lurking here, but all this talk about hockey romance is making me want to branch out from my usual sci-fi. Maybe I'll see if my library has it after all.

Okay, I'm convinced. I'm going to go dig out my library card and see if I can remember my PIN. Wish me luck. Hopefully 'Icebreaker' is there with a reasonable wait. Thanks for all the detailed advice, folks.

Be cautious of websites or apps that advertise 'free audiobooks' with no library card required. Many are either pirate sites (illegal, poor quality, security risks) or are filled with public domain classics (which are great, but not for new releases like 'Icebreaker'). The library apps are the only safe, legal, and high-quality free avenue for contemporary books. Some people also mention apps like 'LibriVox' for free audiobooks, but that's for public domain works read by volunteers. You won't find newly published romance novels there. Stick to the path everyone here is recommending: Libby, Hoopla, etc., through your library.

Accessibility is a huge plus. Library apps often have accessibility features built in, like adjustable playback speed, which is great for different listening preferences. For people with visual impairments or dyslexia, audiobooks are essential, and free access is vital. The library app model isn't just about convenience; it's about inclusion. A title like 'Icebreaker' being readily available in audio through public libraries means more people can enjoy it, regardless of their ability to read print or afford a subscription. That's an aspect we shouldn't overlook when praising the system. It's a public good.

Noah’s a rising hockey star with a mouth that gets him in trouble and a body built to break rules. Sterling is the team's billionaire owner—older, untouchable, and dangerously in control.
They were never supposed to cross that line.
But one reckless moment changes everything.
Now, Noah can’t stop thinking about the man who sees right through him. And Sterling? He’s losing control in ways he swore he never would.
It was supposed to be a mistake.
It’s starting to feel like an obsession.
“You belong to me, Aria,” he growls, his nose brushing against mine. “The harder you push me away, the deeper I fall into this madness of wanting you.”
“You don’t even want a mate!” I remind him, hating how small my voice sounds, and how my body sings whenever he’s this close.
His breath brushes against my lips. “You’re right. I don’t. But I burn for you, Aria, and I don’t think I’ll make it through the season without tasting what’s mine.”
*****
They call Ryder Drexel the Ice King of Ironclaw University, captain of the undefeated Iron Wolves, cold-blooded on the rink and untouchable off it. He doesn’t do distractions. He doesn’t do relationships.
Until her.
Aria Murdock is the opposite. She’s an invisible scholarship student hiding secrets that she’s spent her entire life hiding—she’s a wolf who can’t shift in a world where wolves like her are called runts and are mercilessly killed to be rid of their weak bloodline.
But when an accident reveals her true scent, Ryder’s world fractures.
She’s a walking death sentence. Someone undesirable to most. Off-limits because of her low rank and bloodline.
And she’s his mate.
Now, the Alpha heir has a choice. He can either reject the bond, or risk everything to claim her. The problem? Claiming her means breaking every rule and starting a war within his own pack. It also means revealing who Aria truly is, and she’s so much more than a runt.
They’re enemies by nature, but bound by instinct and fate.
In a world where packs, rules, and reputations reign, claiming her might just cost him everything, especially his heart.
The captain is dead to the world. And I’m the only one holding the kill switch.
Ethan Carter, the "Glacier of Silvercrest," was the most feared Alpha to ever step onto the ice. Now, he’s nothing but a shell—a broken, comatose legend trapped in his own body.
My life? It was supposed to be simple. Graduate, survive the pack’s bottom-tier status, and pay off my father’s ruinous blood-debts. Instead, the pack elders handed me a contract soaked in cold, hard malice: I am the designated "Stabilizer." My only job is to touch him, scent him, and keep his wolf from flatlining.
I thought I was just a glorified nurse. I didn't realize the Alpha was listening.
When Ethan finally wakes, he isn't the hero the Kingdom of Valeria remembers. He’s a starving predator with amber eyes that burn holes through my defenses and a temperament that makes the frost in the mansion seem warm. He hates the bargain, he hates the pack, and—most dangerously—he hates the way his scent turns wild whenever I’m near.
He wants me out of his sight. I want to be out of his reach.
But in a pack built on secrets, someone is still trying to finish the job they started on his life. Now, the man who wants me gone is the only one who can protect me. And as the rink turns into a battlefield, I’m realizing the most dangerous thing about the Alpha isn't his temper... it’s the fact that once he claims a mate, he doesn't know how to let go.
Frozen hearts are meant to shatter. But in the fire of this pack, we’re both going to burn.
He’s the campus hockey king.
She’s the girl he was never supposed to want.
Logan Shaw doesn’t do relationships.
As the captain of the university hockey team and the son of an NHL legend, his future is simple: hockey first, everything else second. Girls are fun. Temporary. And never a complication.
Harper Lane is the exact kind of complication he avoids.
Smart. Stubborn. Completely unimpressed by his reputation—and the one girl on campus who refuses to fall for Logan Shaw’s charm.
They were never supposed to collide.
But when Logan shocks the entire university by spending five thousand dollars to win Harper in a charity date auction, suddenly the whole campus is watching.
What starts as a fake date quickly turns into something much more dangerous.
Late-night celebrations.
Arguments that end in kisses.
Chemistry neither of them can ignore.
Logan was supposed to stay focused on hockey.
Harper was supposed to protect her heart.
Instead, they’re playing a game neither of them knows how to win.
Because the more Logan tries to keep things casual…
the harder he falls.
And when NHL scouts start watching and Logan’s controlling father steps in, Harper becomes the one thing Logan might have to give up to chase the future he’s been raised for.
But walking away from her might be the one game Logan Shaw can’t win.
Enemies-to-lovers tension
Hockey captain energy
Slow burn with explosive chemistry
And a love story that might ruin everything.
An ocean between them didn't kill what they had. It just put it on ice.
The first time Mia Conti saw Elias Weston, she didn't even know his name. He was just the stranger at the airport who lifted her suitcase without a word.
She never expected to see him again—until she walked into the Toronto Raiders' locker room as their new medical intern. Face-to-face with the league's most untouchable, arrogant superstar, Mia realized her "helpful stranger" was actually her biggest professional nightmare.
A fiery romance ignites between them, but keeping it alive across oceans and time zones is a different game.
As the Chief Sports Medicine Specialist for the Winter Olympics, Mia is busier than ever. Her absence from his games has the media convinced their relationship is dead, painting Elias as a billionaire bachelor who has long moved on.
But the tabloids don't see what happens behind closed doors.
When Elias arrives in Milan, the world expects a hockey captain strictly focused on gold. Yet, the second they are alone, his hand closes around her waist with a grip of steel.
"Long time no see, Mia."
The flashbulbs are still going off, but all she can hear is his jagged whisper.
"I came back for you."
Elias Weston has never been afraid of thin ice. And this time, he's ready to let it all crack just to keep her.

Check out the 'Skip the Line' or 'Lucky Day' features some library systems have on Libby. They set aside extra copies of super popular books for instant borrowing, but it’s first-come, first-served. You have to check regularly and get lucky. I snagged a Colleen Hoover book that way once when the regular hold was months long. Might work for 'Icebreaker' too.
Consider the ethical angle for a second. Authors and narrators get paid when you borrow through library apps (the library purchases a license) and when you use a trial (the service pays the publisher). They get nothing from pirated streams. So while finding a 'free' option is the goal, sticking to the legal paths ensures the people who created the content you enjoy can keep doing it. That's why I'm always happy to wait on a Libby hold or use a trial. It supports the ecosystem that produces more of the stories I love. Free shouldn't mean exploitative.
What's the chapter length like? I listen during my commute, which is about 25 minutes each way. I prefer audiobooks where chapters roughly fit into that window so I can finish a chapter in one sitting. If 'Icebreaker' has super long chapters, I might pause in the middle of a scene, which is less satisfying. Can anyone who's listened comment on the chapter pacing for a commuter?
Can someone explain how Scribd's 'unlimited' works with throttling? I've heard after a few bestsellers, they limit your options. Does that affect trial users too?
The privacy aspect is worth considering. When you borrow a physical book, your reading habits are between you and the library's checkout system. With digital loans, the app provider and potentially the publisher get detailed data on your reading speed, when you read, where you stop, etc.
For most people, the convenience outweighs this. But it's a different relationship with reading that's more quantified and tracked. Just something to be aware of in our data-heavy world.
