Finished the first chapter and it's heavy! How many hours will reading 1984's full novel take at a standard pace, versus a deep dive?

Of course, this depends on reading speed. But because ‘1984’ is basically a story about a rather oppressive society and develops from there, complex human beings in strange circumstances, it could be quite an interesting contrast to ‘Slavery: A series of erotic games (book 01)’. Here, too, issues of power, psychological control etc. are described in the frame of a completely different story, this time of transactional intimacy and high-stakes games where personal agency is on the line.

How long does it take to read a piece of string? Well, that depends on several things. Are you reading to see if you can check off a box, or are you looking to have your mind opened to a completely new way of viewing life? The first may take a few days or weeks. The second could take a lifetime, because you will find yourself returning to the book again and again as you ponder the insights you have been given. I have read this book three times in the last twenty years, and each time it has felt like a completely different book. How long it has taken to read it has also been affected by the reader that I am at the time.

Real talk though: that super long theoretical chapter in the middle of the book (The Book within the book) could be skimmed in order to finish reading the rest of the novel 25% faster. But please don’t. The ideological heart of the novel, that long chapter in the middle is the ‘why’ behind all of the ‘what’ that happens in the novel. Reading it is like eating a sandwich and getting to eat the filling too. It’s worth reading slowly in order to get the most out of it.

I recently read ‘1984’ by George Orwell. The book is roughly 328 pages long depending on the edition. Considering I’m quite a fast reader, I read this book in 6-7 hours over 2 days. Although the authors use words in a very direct manner, there are many themes in the book which made me stop reading in some parts to think about what I had just read. The tension and suspense throughout the book made me not put the book down.
Again, assuming an average reader of 200-250 words per minute, this book would likely take around 8-10 hours to read. However, given the depth of Orwell’s work into the ideas of Newspeak and the totalitarian surveillance state, I wouldn’t recommend rushing through this book too quickly. I’ve known friends to take weeks to read this book, and then discuss each chapter at great length. Again, for a casual read of this book, plan out a weekend. For academic research and analysis, 12-15 hours or more could easily be spent unpacking the hidden symbolism, and delving deeper into the historical inspirations behind the book.

This book was read in 3 sittings over about 5 hours. Although “1984” is not a long book, the intense writing of Orwell makes it feel longer in a good way. The rapid flow of pages results from the unrelenting plot. Slow readers, or those who like to annotate, will doubtless take twice as long to read this. It was worth it, though.

He’s ruthless in his quest to make me understand who’s the master of me. He said-I belong to him, that he owns me. He promised retaliation for every rule break. His touch meant for punishment burns me, leaves me thinking maybe he’s right which only makes me hate him more.
But he forgot about my promise to him-The day he locked me in his cage I promised him, I’d make him beg on his knees & at the end of this nightmare I’d wake up with a smile on my face.

I’ve never actually counted up the pages of 1984. I’ve read it three times – once on screen, and twice in paperback – but I couldn’t tell you how many pages of paper any of those were. I can tell you about the smell of old paper, about the weight of the paperback in my hand on a rainy afternoon, about the chill that ran down my spine on reading the boots crushing the human face forever. The page number is data, the experience is memory. Maybe I’m just being sentimental but reducing a book like this to a number reduces it. It’s not a file size. The book is a world that you enter for a while. The number of gates into that world doesn’t change the world itself.
