Louis L’Amour created an epic family saga in The Sacketts series that covers generations of a hardy pioneer family and makes them as memorable as the locations in which they live. Tell Sackett and his brother Orrin are the main characters in most of the stories, followed by their younger brother Tyrel. Orrin is more refined, political and educated than his brothers, but they are all tough men. Orrin is definitely the leader of the two older brothers and is portrayed as a strong leader. He is compared to Tell Sackett who is a lone wolf. His brother Tyrel is very young in most of the stories and is known for being very fast with his guns. He is also very loyal to his family. Then there is the youngest of the three brothers, Tyrel Sackett. Fast with a gun and noted for his loose and carefree life, Tyrel is very much a young man. But he is a loyal member of his family and is always there when needed. Women feature large in the Sackett stories and many of them are strong and forceful women. Ange Kerry, for example, is as tough as Tell Sackett and every bit as determined to survive on the harsh American frontier. Other women such as Drusilla Alvarado also feature in the stories and there is nothing to suggest that the Sackett world is a masculine one. Also included in the extensive cast of characters are other Sacketts including the patriarch Barnabas and his numerous descendants who followed him out to settle and develop the western frontiers of the country. Each book in the series is a separate novel but they are all all about different members of the family and so feature recurring themes of family, of struggle to succeed and of justice. L’Amour wrote all his novels with fully realized characters, faultless but brave and honorable. In the Sacketts there are characters to like for almost every kind of reader. Tell is the very quiet hero of the opening volume, adult and sure of himself while his two young brothers are not. There’s the charming, polished Orrin and the boy Tyrel who is quick with his gun.

I can really get into the implied history of this setting. This book is just the surface of all the plot and history that there is at the Estate, in the mist, on the borders with the fae. A whole load of past conflict and betrayal has been left to Gemma and Talan to uncover. The presence of the demon is not random; it is a symptom of some past sin and the readers get to follow the characters on an archaeological dig to uncover the tragedy of the past and how they deal with it. The amount of mystery in this is really good.

The central twist of this story is that Gabe is bankrupt. When Natalie thinks she is signing on with a very wealthy sugar daddy, she has no idea that her patron is actually a penniless chap. This twist recontextualizes much of what has gone before and offers a sharp insight into the way that illusions about a lifestyle can underpin some very serious crime.

In the end, it’s a victory, albeit bittersweet. The Mogs have been defeated, Setrákus Ra has been sent back to the depths of space, and the surviving Garde, whether human or Loric, can now return to Earth, scarred though it is. And after everything he’s been through, John Crews can finally find some peace. The ending is hopeful, yes, but one can’t help feeling that the ultimate cost of reaching that point has been too high to bear.

I think of this as more of a story than a main plot. A mystery that unfolds throughout this slice-of-life type of story. Kang Younghyun does a great job in creating this weird building and then giving us a series of anthology-like chapters where we get to see the different tenants and their stories – a ghost looking to clear up some unfinished business, a goblin running a black market in the building, a human family living next door completely unaware of their strange neighbors. The plot basically follows Younghyun as he tries to piece together the different stories to determine the purpose of the building. His trying to maintain the delicate truce is full of tension, and it appears his past is connected to the building in some way that he’s only just beginning to realize. The artwork is detailed and gritty making every cracked wall and dark shadow feel important.

This is really a story about trauma and recovery. Yes, it’s a fantasy story, but if you take away all the magical elements, it’s a story about a girl whose village and home was destroyed, and she was held captive. And a guy who’s been carrying around the weight of leadership, and has failed before. Their journey together is of them triggering each other’s wounds, learning how to deal with each other’s wounds, and slowly gaining trust of each other. The process of healing the land mirrors their healing of each other. Thus many of the key scenes are not the big battles but rather the quiet moments of vulnerability where one or other of them shares a memory from their past or admits a fear. These are plot crucial as is the fantasy crisis that provides the external conflict to test them. But the real substance of the story are these moments of quiet victory over despair. This is why the romance is so convincing, it is not just a case of two people falling for each other. Instead it is based on a mutual process of healing each other of their respective traumas.

The story revolves around the fear of being replaced by a fake version of oneself and Dinah’s specific horror at watching her friends and brothers lose their personalities one by one. The plot follows Dinah’s struggle to retrieve her friends from the hypnotized children who have been transformed into pod people or Stepford wives. Although the main drive of the story is to keep Dinah alive, her greater emotional drive is to save her friends from being turned into hollow, soulless shells. This gives the story a huge amount of emotional weight. The headmaster is not just a bad guy who needs to be defeated by the children in order for them to win. He is a thief of souls who is taking the real personalities of the children and replacing them with fake ones. The children’s victory is not only the restoration of Dinah to the group, but also the return of their friends, their school, and their peace of mind. It is a hopeful plot because it tells the reader that the real you, with all your imperfections, is worth fighting for and that no matter how hard someone tries to erase you from existence, as long as there are other people who remember you and are fighting for you, you can never truly be erased.

‘Blackfire Book’ is a Psychological Thriller disguised as a Fantasy novel. At its core, ‘Blackfire Book’ is a story about knowledge and how it can be the greatest seduction of all. Blackfire Book follows Elara, a young academic trying to pay off some debts by translating a rare and mysterious ancient tome. But as Elara reads on through the book, she starts to see things that have never happened before. Or have they? The story is told from the perspective of an unreliable narrator and is influenced by a host of supporting characters including a seemingly honorable knight in armor named Torin with a secret to share regarding the book’s previous owner. Little touches make the greater whole even better, such as the red of the book's ink seeming to dry to a stain long past in candlelight. Each chapter begins with a separate character scribbling their own margin notes – which become increasingly deranged over the course of the book. My own personal favorite? When Elara attempts to incinerate a page only to find it fully intact the next morning. It's a scene that has lingered with me long after I'd closed the book and began to survey my own shelves. The story of the Blackfire Book, bound from the skin of the book's first reader, pops up unexpectedly in my mind from time to time. The few stories that have managed to make me wonder whether or not I'm stuck in the same sort of haze as the main character are the few that truly resonate with me. This is one of them.

As the Neuroscientist delves into the unknown, he questions his sanity while things start to get worse. The artwork takes up most of the burden in terms of oppressing the reader.
