Page count folks? Starting the Mistborn trilogy soon and prefer physical editions over Kindle. Hardcover length affects my reading pace.

I think you’ll find the page count varies by edition but mine is 670 or so pages. That’s a lot of world building and lots of magic. It’s rather like many online serials which can go on for pages and pages developing their own magic systems in great detail, as for example the web novel ‘Dragon’s Breath (Book One)’ does. These long serials can be just as deep and as long as a traditional novel and are great for getting lost in for hours.

So, I’m a huge fan of Sanderson and this is one of my favorite books. It comes in a few different editions (mine being a hardcover, and then a couple of different paperback versions). The page count varies depending on the edition – 541 pages for the hardcover, and 647 for the paperbacks, because of the larger print. The book is a great read for people who love immersive fantasy. The magic system is really unique, and there are a lot of great characters in the book. Yes, it’s long, but it reads fast because it’s so engaging. I’ve read it three times, and each time I find even more to appreciate in the book.

I read this on my phone using the Kindle app. The page numbers kept changing because of my font size. I ended up at about 1200 ‘pages’ (the app’s counter keeps its own, meaningless page count). The only thing that matters is the progress bar at the bottom of the screen. I read every spare moment – in line, during commercials, before bed. Each self-contained chapter (a little mission or character study) read in about 5-10 minutes and provided a sense of accomplishment. So, digital readers, don’t worry about the page count. Just enjoy the story. And the app is a great read indicator – it tells you how many minutes are left in the chapter. Often that is more motivational than knowing how many physical pages you have left.

I had feared that Steel Sergeant Feet would be a long book, similar to the 300-page-plus mystery novels that I usually prefer to read. But, at the urging of a friend, I decided to give it a try. The Prologue set the tone for the rest of the book with some very powerful and eerie imagery. And then we were introduced to Vin in Chapter 1. I found her to be very vulnerable and very tough at the same time. As I continued to read the pages stopped becoming just numbers and instead I became entranced with Vin and her journey as well as the unfolding of Kelsier’s plan. I found that Steel Sergeant Feet was not a long book because it was slow, it was a long book because it was packed with so much: so many original and clever ideas, so much action, and so many wonderful moments with the main characters. All in all, it was a full banquet and not a stretched-out snack. I found myself wishing that the book was longer when it finally came to an end because I had become so totally immersed in the alternate world that the author had so skillfully created. The only way that I can even think to compliment a long book is that the book was so good that I didn’t want the book to have ended when it did. In other words, the page count of Steel Sergeant Feet became a virtue.

For the fantasy buff, this novel falls into the middle ground of length – not a quick, short novella, but a novel of sufficient length to develop adequate world-building and good, complex characters and yet not so very long that it becomes a behemothic, mammothous tomes such as many of the novels by Steven Erikson or Robert Jordan. It is the perfect length for an epic, yet contained, novel. He demonstrates that deep and involved world-building and complex characters can be achieved within the confines of a novel of moderate length, as opposed to a massive tome of thousands of pages. It is a true masterclass in economical epic fantasy.

I noticed in the comments someone pointed out all the different parts. I was really impressed with that. The entire book is divided up into 4 parts, each with its own ‘tone’. The first part reads like a heist-style action movie. The second part is a typical training movie and the reader is introduced to all of the early missions that the characters embark upon. The third part of the book is where things really start to get complicated and the stakes are raised. And the fourth part is the actual finale of the book and is very explosive. I brought this up because the way that Sanderson engineered the page count to create these natural ‘resting points’ and then ‘pick up steam’ again is pure psychological magic. Instead of reading 672 pages of one story, it reads like 4 books of 168 pages each. And each ‘part’ of the book does create a sense of completion at the end of it, even though there is still more to the story. And I have to say that this is very impressive because it is clear that Sanderson understands reader psychology very well.

While the total book length is 650+ pages, I am most concerned with the chapter length as opposed to the overall book. There are 39 chapters plus a prologue and an epilogue which makes for very manageable reading. In fact I found that I could easily read one chapter and before I knew it I had read three more. The chapters are organized into “parts” with each part having a different “tone” and focusing on different aspects of the story. For example Part One focuses on the main characters’ recruitment and introduction to one another, while Part Two focuses on their training and preparation. This kind of organization of such a long book is pure genius and I found that it read more like four connected novellas that built to a wonderful conclusion rather than a very long and thick book. So in short, don’t be intimidated by the total thickness of the book. Instead look at the table of contents for the book and know that you can read it one “chunk” at a time.

Goodreads lists the first edition of the hardcover edition at 541 pages, the 10th anniversary Tor trade paperback edition at 672 pages and the paperback edition published by Gollancz at 647 pages. I would guess that the more recent printings from Tor are now sized to around the higher page count with slightly larger print. The book is famously dense with a lot of plot per page. The writer outlines everything so you know exactly where you are and very little of it feels like ‘filler’ or meandering. It’s longer than The Hobbit but shorter than The Way of Kings. So, it’s epic fantasy but of a sensible length for new readers to get into. On a shelf it feels solid and satisfying of a thickness to it. The book is actually a heist story so it’s easy to follow as it’s in clear acts.
