Man, I miss new Crichton books. That's all. Reading this thread makes me want to do a full re-read. Maybe in order this time. I usually just re-read 'JP' and 'Timeline' every few years. There's a comfort in them, even though they're about disaster. Weird, huh?

The 'techno-thriller' genre he pioneered feels different now. Reading 'The Andromeda Strain' in 2024, the technology is charmingly archaic. The fear isn't. That's what holds up. The fear of the unknown, of systems failing, of human error. Going through them in order, you see that core fear adapt – from pandemic, to brain control, to dinosaurs, to nanotech. The vessel changes, the terror is constant. That's why his books still work.

Heh, my dad had a whole shelf of these with the cracked spines. I stole 'Jurassic Park' when I was way too young and had nightmares for weeks. Good times. Never read them in order, just whatever looked cool. Might have to do that now, just for the nostalgia hit. Seeing them laid out in order here kinda makes me want to give it a proper shot.

Where should I start reading Michael Crichton books?

Honestly, just google a list of his novels and point blindly. They're all pretty much bangers from the late 60s through the early 2000s. The only ones I'd maybe caution against as a first read are the posthumously published ones ('Pirate Latitudes,' 'Dragon Teeth') because they weren't fully polished by him, or 'The Lost World' because it's a sequel. Otherwise, it's a target-rich environment. You can't lose.

Which Michael Crichton novel is the best starting point for new readers?

Consider the audiobooks! Narrators like Scott Brick and George Wilson have narrated many of his titles. Listening to 'Jurassic Park' or 'Prey' during a commute is an incredible experience. The technical details become easier to absorb when heard, and the tension is amplified. If you're new to his work and enjoy audiobooks, choose the one with the highest audio ratings. It's a different, and for some, superior, way to experience his dense, explanatory prose. The performance can bring the clinical details to life in a way silent reading sometimes misses.
