The late 1990s Spider-Man comic books from McFarlane are a hot mess of a ‘bubble’ price and actual historical significance. Recently I sold near mint copies of Spider-Man #1 for $120 each but the actual higher value Amazing Spider-Man issues score much higher. Amazing Spider-Man #300 is apparently the ‘holy grail’ copy and I was blown away by a CGC 9.6 copy of the book which was listed for sale at a recent con for $1,800. Lower Issue numbers with McFarlane’s first full artwork are also highly sought after on the secondary market for $100-$200 each. Surprisingly, many collectors place a higher value on the rare black suit covers for their iconic status over the actual story contained within. If you own these book, get them graded as high grade slabbed copies receive a premium on the market.

Todd McFarlane's run on Spider-Man as writer and artist is legendary. Some of his best work was done on 'The Amazing Spider-Man' #300–328, and his launch of the 'Spider-Man' title in 1990, written by him and with art by him in 'Spider-Man' #1 (1990) is a great read, with some of the issues reaching very high values, like #300 with the first appearance of the villain Venom which can sell for $500 - $2,000.00 in near mint condition, and his last issue on Spider-Man, #328, can reach the same prices.

The speculative bubble of the 1990s led to over printing of many issues but the artwork of McFarlane, and particularly the iconic covers, continue to generate interest. It’s not uncommon to see raw copies of Spider-Man #1 sell for $20 at cons but a CGC 9.8 slab can command upwards of $300. Essentially, look for first appearances, key moments in storylines and check for spine stress and fading, as with any comic, and you can’t go wrong with a_entry into the nostalgic goldmine that is the McFarlane era of Spider-Man.

For those new to Comic Book Speculating, collecting McFarlane's Spider-Man is like riding a rollercoaster. Prices for Amazing Spider-Man #298-328 fluctuate greatly depending on the speculator's perception of how nostalgic a comic book is for him/her and the comic book's condition. For example, Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1st Silver Surfer/Sentry appearance) might fetch $100 in circulated form, while a 9.8 graded copy could easily command over $2,000. Even the more common Spider-Man #1 has sub-clans of variants (green cover vs. etc.) that are printed to comic book industry ‘non-scarcity’ levels (i.e. there are too many copies to be of value) but due to his iconic, dynamic poses and the iconic dark/grimy shadow work he brought to the pages of Spider-Books, the comic books are HIGHLY Speculated after and FUN to hunt for (even in bargain bins, like I found a raw copy of Amazing Spider-Man #316 for $5, which I later pressed and sold for $75).

McFarlane's work on Spider-Man in the 1990s was pure genius. I have found Spider-Man #1 lying about for $15 or so in stores. Amazing Spider-Man #300 is another key book, but even in mid-grade it can be found for $500 or so. The cover for Amazing Spider-Man #328 is particularly nice with Spider-Man's suit torn. You can find trends and what people are paying for such comics by looking up completed eBay listings. I have noticed a large increase in price for Venom related comics when a new Venom movie comes out. Grading is also important, a 9.8 can triple the value of the same lower graded comic. As always, I say buy what you like because the comics can fluctuate in value, but the work of McFarlane will never depreciate in value.
