'My Sister the Serial Killer' is a work of fiction that feels so real it’s almost true. Written by rinse Braithwaite, the story follows the life of Korede, a nurse who takes care of laundry and helps her sister Ayoola cover up her crimes. A perfect blend of family drama and dark humor, the book explores Lagos as you’ve never seen it before. So much like Korede and Ayoola’s tense and taut sibling relationship. It explores the question of how far would you go for family and makes you ponder the morality of it all. It’s not true crime but a thrilling and thought-provoking novel that explores themes of loyalty and morality.

I just finished reading ‘My Sister the Serial Killer’ and I am reeling from the dark and twisted storyline of this fictional novel. Written by Oyinkan Braithwaite, author of crime fiction, ‘My Sister the Serial Killer’ is not a true story and while the murders in the book are fictional, the themes of enabling a serial killer and the pressures that families feel to protect their loved ones, regardless of how toxic they are, is very real. The majority of the novel is set in the chaotic and vibrant city of Lagos and you can really feel the authors Nigerian culture and background in the story.

What I loved most about this novel was how it exposed complicity. Korede had cleaned up after her sister Ayoola on so many occasions, despite loathing her, and as the story unfolds we understand more and more about how she felt. What is most interesting is that instead of glorifying violence the author uses dark humor to expose how easily we ignore the evil in front of us as long as it is wrapped up in a pretty package. This is a satirical novel and a very good one at that. It is written by someone with a background in crime fiction, as well as Nigerian culture, and that comes across in the writing. (It’s not true crime though – I did warn you!).
