Which TV Shows Depict A Female Professor Falling For Her Student?

For dominant divorced women on TV, Why Women Kill is some seriously fun programming. Simone, the Season 1 fittie of the show, is pure, smoked-out, stiletto clad glamour with a healthy dose of grit to back up her dame-like demeanor. Meanwhile, Grace and Frankie’s personas as elderly women are equally as domineering and powerful in their own late-in-life way. And though The Flight Attendant’s Cassie is a hot mess of a character, her wildly dominating, unruly nature is sort of inspiring in a tangled, twisted, worthless kind of way. These women are all left in their marriages and refuse to be defined by them — that’s really the only kind of story I’m interested in right now.

In live-action television aimed at children and teens post-2000, this trope almost entirely disappears. Shows on Disney Channel, as well as many Nickelodeon sitcoms, feature children who are grounded or told a point and then jump right back to their normal activities. The worst behavior a child displays is possibly to argue with a parent, and even then the parent is typically either goofy or strict. Physical punishment, even in comedic situations, is never shown to be administered to child characters. Rather, the new fictional world of discipline is spoken, and based on privilege. Is this more realistic for today’s families? Perhaps. The scripted new world of conflict between parents and children is further sanitized, and therefore less charged, than in the past. Rather than struggling over basic human needs, today’s teens have their parents to contend with over WiFi access and the right to use the car.

I get excited talking about this kind of messy, human drama — partner swapping and swinging show up across a surprising range of TV, from gritty dramas to trashy reality shows. If you want a show that makes that theme central, start with 'Swingtown' — it’s basically built around suburban couples in the 1970s experimenting with partner-swapping and the social ripple effects. The series treats it as a cultural phenomenon, showing both the allure and the awkward fallout, and it’s useful if you want a period piece that actually foregrounds the moral and psychological consequences. If you prefer something more contemporary and adult, 'Californication' throws that kind of storyline into the mix frequently: swinger parties, casual swapping and the chaos that ensues are part of the show's messy sexual economy. On the queer side, 'Queer as Folk' and 'The L Word' both explore non-monogamy, open relationships and moments that read like partner-exchange subplots — they approach it with different tones, one more raw and party-driven, the other more character-focused and emotionally nuanced. Reality TV leans into partner reshuffling as a mechanic: 'Temptation Island' and 'Love Island' don’t call it “swinging,” but their whole structure is designed around testing couples by exposing them to new partners and recouplings. I also think shows that aren’t strictly about swinging still dip into swap territory as a device — 'Shameless' often has tangled bedroom scenes and casual arrangements, while certain seasons of more adult dramas or supernatural shows (think parties or orgies in 'True Blood') use partner swapping for shock or to explore characters’ boundaries. Personally, I find the way each show frames it — as satire, tragedy, eroticism or social study — is what makes these plots interesting rather than just salacious.

Mostly at Warner Brothers Ranch with various other locations used for key scenes. All shooting took place on the enormous property which has several large lakes, extensive forests, and lots of wide-open space to establish a country-like setting. A fish pond would have been one of the property’s several large reservoirs. The scenes shot at the schoolhouse would have likely been shot on the ‘town’ part of the set at Warner Brothers. A small crew would have traveled to Virginia for a few specific ‘pickup shots’ of the Blue Ridge Mountains – and that was about it. They would have also shot and edited together a ton of pre-existing footage to acheive the iconic shots they needed in those scenes. Very resourceful and cost effective.

I have a sort of soft spot for failed visual experiments. This show was one of them. I mean, I think you can tell that a lot of money was thrown at the screen, and generally the location swapping worked pretty well for a TV budget of that era. Nowadays I imagine it would be about 90% green screen, but as it stands the leaves are real, the sand is real, the ocean spray is real... it's all very tactile and satisfying, and rather like a time capsule of late-2000s adventure TV attempting to do something different. It's not something that I think any network would commission today, of this budget and premise, with all the locations shifted around virtually instead.

Most dark romance TV shows are adaptations. One of my favorites is the TV-series ‘You’. The TV-series is based on Caroline Kepnes’ novels about the same topic and is a very dark interpretation of love and the borderline between love and obsession. As observer of the happenings the series makes you question what is right and what is wrong. Is love enough to make something right? 'Gebracht durchs Böse. Eine dunkle Liebe‘ – another dark romantic favorite of mine are 'The Vampire Diaries'. In the framework of the supernatural drama unfolding between humans and vampires unfolded a very dark love story and consequently also romantic entanglements. 'Outlander' is another show based off a novel series by Diana Gabaldon. This show is a long, sweeping love story through time that follows the tender and rough relationship of Jamie and Claire. A great choice for people who love dark, twisted romance.

To a writer, an oblivious character is one of the best plot engines around. They inevitably create conflict and, nearly every time, it’s entirely organic to them and, therefore, the story. In almost every instance, a single misunderstandings or the character’s total lack of awareness of a single social nicety can lead to an entire scene of hilarity. This was particularly evident in the first season or two of ‘Parks and Recreation’, where Lesley Knope is shown to be totally unaware of how most people perceive her. Her naivety made her an underdog that the viewer instantly rooted for the character. She created a perfect foil for her ‘straight man’ co-stars. This sort of character can make for a great story – especially for a series. The story becomes the oblivious character’s journey to awareness.

I would suggest you start with Lanie's film "How to Build a Better Boy" which is a really fun movie to watch. Mae is a character who starts off as a control freak but learns to roll with life's messiness. Her journey is really relatable and Lanie does a great job of bringing warmth to her role as the strange girl with a robot boyfriend. The movie has a lot of heart and a lot of humor. It's just a really fun movie and it has that classic Disney Channel feel to it. It's a really good "watch on a lazy day" kind of movie.

Three recs that make me question reality: ‘Homecoming’ (the Julia Roberts version), a Memory Fragmentation film that plays with memory through unusual aspect ratios; ‘Orphan Black’ (not strictly a DID movie, but this would be a great primer for any actress, and Tatiana Maslany plays all of the clones with such personality and depth, it’s the ultimate acting exercise); and ‘The Jinx’ (a true crime documentary), in which Robert Durst’s nonchalant muttered confession to murder is more bizarre than any psychology-impaired rendering of truth.

D.E.B.S. is a campy spy-spoof that is best described as being light-hearted and very funny. In this flick, the main villainess Lucy Diamond is older than the young top-secret agent Amy. Their romance is depicted to be hilarious and very sweet, often to an over-the-top degree. This movie doesn’t take itself seriously at all. It is a cartoonish spy-flick with a basis in lesbian pulp fiction. The largest point of interest is the large age difference between villainess Diamond and hero nemesis Amy. Diamond is the super-villain to Amy’s heroic side. It is a very enjoyable movie and a lot of fun. The chemistry between the leads is excellent and has helped the film to earn a cult-like following.
