For a truly unique start, 'Light From Uncommon Stars' by Ryka Aoki blends sci-fi, fantasy, and a deal-with-the-devil story... with donuts. The detective element is subtle—characters uncovering each other's secrets and pasts in a quest for redemption. It shows that a ‘mystery’ can be about identity and fate, not just murder.

For a police procedural with a shocking institutional twist, 'The Academy' by a former officer is gripping. The detective is a rookie assigned to a secret unit that investigates crimes within the police force itself. The internal politics and constant danger of being ostracized create incredible tension. The first case involves the death of a whistleblower. It's gritty, morally complex, and sets up a series-long arc about cleaning house from within. Not for the faint of heart, but feels very of-the-moment.

I'm wary of recommendations that call something 'the next Gone Girl' or 'the next Sherlock'. It sets impossible expectations. A new series I liked simply called itself a mystery. 'The Curfew' by T.M. Logan is a thriller about parents investigating their own daughter, so not a detective series. For a series, 'The Patient' by Jasper DeWitt is a hospital horror... Ugh, my memory is failing me today. I'll just listen to what others suggest.

I love a detective with a unique skill set. 'The Librarian of Burned Books' is a historical novel, but the mystery thread is strong. The protagonist uses her knowledge of banned literature and publishing to uncover a conspiracy. It's more of an investigator role than a police detective, and the post-WWII setting is haunting. The ending clearly leaves room for her to tackle another literary mystery, perhaps involving a different cache of forbidden texts. Intriguing and cerebral.

Sometimes the best new series come from authors known for standalones. I was surprised to see that 'The Housemaid's Secret' by Freida McFadden is part of a series, but it's more thriller than detective. For a true detective launch, 'The Last Word' by Taylor Adams is a cat-and-mouse, not a series. So maybe ignore this. I'm just thinking out loud about author patterns.

Which new mystery thriller book releases start a fresh series?

I'm a sucker for a historical angle. 'The Lincoln Highway' by Amor Towles isn't a pure thriller, but it has a gripping, race-against-time mystery at its heart during a 1950s road trip. It's more literary, but the tension is superb. For a proper historical mystery series starter, maybe 'The Venice Sketchbook' by Rhys Bowen? That's more historical fiction with mystery elements. Hmm. For a direct, plot-driven historical thriller series start, I'd actually point you to 'The Diamond Eye' by Kate Quinn—wait, that's based on a true story and standalone. This is harder than I thought! The best pure historical mystery series lately seem to be continuations, not fresh starts.

Oh! Almost forgot about academic mysteries. 'The Oxford Exam' is the first in a series about a disillusioned philosophy professor who applies logic puzzles to real-world murders on campus. The recurring cast of eccentric dons and ambitious students provides both suspects and comic relief. It's like 'Morse' meets 'The Good Place'. The detective's weapon is a Socratic question, not a gun.

Which new detective book series should I start with this year?

Libraries are doing amazing 'Readalike' displays and online lists. Can't get enough of 'Knives Out'? There's a list for that. Love Vera Stanhope? Here are ten similar detectives. These are curated by librarians who know the genre inside and out and can make connections beyond simple algorithmic 'users also bought' links. I found a fantastic new series about a crossword puzzle editor detective through a 'If you like the puzzle aspect of 'The Thursday Murder Club'' display. It was a perfect match I never would have found on my own. Librarians are the ultimate human algorithms for book matching. Before you buy anything, check your local library's website or pop in and browse their themed displays. It's free, it supports a vital institution, and you might discover your next favorite author purely because their book was sitting next to one you already love.

Which recent crime novels start a fresh long running series?

I enjoyed 'One by One' by Ruth Ware, but it's a standalone. She's more in the 'Agatha Christie-esque standalone' camp. For a series, you often have to go to the slightly less splashy, mid-list authors who are nurtured by their publishers for the long term, not the one-book megadeal.

Which recent sci fi book starts a fresh cyberpunk detective series?

The cover art for a lot of these is stunning. 'Nexus City Blues' has this gorgeous, minimalist neon silhouette. 'The Glitch Dogs of Hong Kong' has a chaotic, glitched-out mosaic. 'The Gilded Circuit' is pure art deco elegance. They look amazing on a shelf. Sometimes you really can judge a book by its cover, at least to know if it's committing to its aesthetic. Publishers are really investing in the visual identity of these series, which is great to see. It draws you into the world before you even read the first page.

Which 2022 mystery thrillers started new detective or investigator series?

The comparison to TV is inevitable. Many of these read like a great pilot episode for a TV series: a strong hook, a defined protagonist, a supporting cast with potential, and a world that can generate new stories. 'The Club' is a limited series waiting to happen. 'Killers of a Certain Age' is a fantastic movie or ongoing show premise. Reading them, you can almost cast them in your head, which is part of the fun.

Which new crime thriller books feature detectives with dark secrets?

I read an advance copy of 'The Hush House' and the secret there is medical: the detective has a terminal diagnosis he’s hiding, and he’s using his remaining time to solve a cold case that personally haunts him. It’s less about the mystery (which is fairly straightforward) and more about a man conducting his own legacy while wrestling with anger and acceptance. Bring tissues—it’s emotionally brutal in the best way.

Which new crime and thriller books feature female detectives?

For a dose of sci-fi mixed with your crime, 'The Spare Man' by Mary Robinette Kowal is a locked-room mystery on a luxury space liner. The detective is Tesla Crane, a brilliant engineer with a chronic pain condition and a service dog. She’s sharp, wealthy, and uses her technical knowledge to solve the crime when her husband is framed. It’s a fantastic blend of noir sensibilities and futuristic tech, with a whip-smart, disabled heroine at the center. The detective work is logical, inventive, and deeply satisfying. A total breath of fresh air for the genre.

Which new thriller mystery books follow detectives with dark pasts?

Man, a dark past for a detective is almost its own subgenre at this point. If you haven't read 'The Maidens' by Alex Michaelides yet, jump on it. The protagonist is a therapist, not a cop, but she's grappling with her own recent, profound trauma while getting drawn into a murder at Cambridge. It's got that brooding, psychologically wounded investigator vibe in spades, and the Greek tragedy undertones are a fantastic twist. The pacing is more slow-burn dread than action-packed, which really lets the darkness seep in.

Which 2020 thrillers started new crime series or franchises?

I'm skeptical about some of these being called 'series starters.' A sequel doesn't always mean a planned, enduring franchise. Sometimes it's just a second book capitalizing on success. A true franchise has a broader vision, maybe a story arc spanning multiple books, or a universe that can support spin-offs. 'The Thursday Murder Club' feels like a true franchise. Some others feel like 'we did a sequel because the first sold.'
