I'm wary of books that use real tragedies as mere set dressing for a love story. 'The Titanic' did it, and now every disaster seems fair game. Authors need to handle that blend with way more sensitivity than some of these releases show.
I mostly read fantasy, but the historical blends that grab me are the ones where the setting is so vivid it's like a character. 'The Nightingale's Cage' (French Revolution) did that. The romance was almost secondary to the terrifying, alive feeling of Paris at the time.
I tried 'The Golden Thread' but DNF'd it. The romance between a silk weaver and a trader on the Silk Road felt rushed, and the historical details about the trade routes were info-dumped. Maybe others will like it, but it wasn't for me.

I once saved Jonathan’s life, but he never knew it was me. Instead, he gave his heart to my younger sister, Seraphina. When tragedy struck, I became the villain in everyone's story especially in Jonathan's story.
Years later, a forced marriage filled with resentment and silence, binds us together. When my sister returns, healed and ready to reclaim Jonathan, I walk away only to discover something that will change the course of my fate.
I rebuild myself from nothing, rising into power. But the past begins to resurface, and the truth comes out about an unquestioned detail in our childhood memory, and the person I trusted the most was the reason my life was destroyed.
Now Jonathan wants forgiveness but this time, I'll only seek the truth even if it burns us all.

Lila Carrington gets the most shocking news from her father at dinner one day, and all he said was a decree that she has to follow through with even though she has her own
reservations—she was supposed to tie the knot with Levi Beaumont. The Carrington and Beaumont families have been enemies for decades, and truthfully none of them know the real reason behind the fight because each person seems to have their own side to the story, so Lila did not understand the reason that her father, who taught her never to associate herself with the Beaumont family, was the same one pushing her into marriage with one of them.
Levi did not want the relationship either, but the families had to form an alliance so they could both remain in business. It had to be done. Driven with the passion to stay in business, Lila and Levi help their family out, but with the promise to their parents that it would only last a year and they would be done.
What happens when they begin to fall for each other?
Do the Carringtons and the Beaumonts reunite, or does a war happen?
Legacy of Love and War is a romance like you have never seen before.
Torn between the man she loves, and the man who loves her....
Cordia Pike has always been strong-willed, but she knows her family expects her to accept the hand of her childhood friend, Jaris Adams, in marriage. As the conflict between the states continues to escalate, Cordia hopes it will last long enough for her to find a way to free herself without breaking her friend’s heart.
On the eve of war, as the men prepare to ride off to battle, Cordia meets a mysterious newcomer. There’s just something about Will Tucker that she finds both intriguing and dangerous. Under the guise of caring for his sister, she makes a plan to write to him. Perhaps by the time the war is over, Will’s feelings for Cordia will have blossomed into the love she is starting to feel for the Union soldier.
But war is evil and complex, and by the time it begins to wind its way through Southwest Missouri, one of these men will be dead, and Cordia will find herself betrothed to a man she loathes. Will she have the courage to follow her heart and stand up for what she believes in like so many others, or will she do as she is told and acquiesce to a loveless marriage to a heartless traitor?
What's the actual question again? Got lost thinking about that one scene in 'The Gentlemen's Gambit' with the stolen kiss in the British Museum. My brain is a sieve for details sometimes.
Colleen McCullough's 'Masters of Rome' series is the ultimate deep dive, starting with 'The First Man in Rome'. While it's political and military historical fiction, the marriages and relationships between figures like Sulla, Marius, Caesar, and Servilia are central to the narrative. These are love stories, marriages of convenience, and passionate affairs that directly influence the real history of the Roman Republic's fall.
The blend is total; you cannot separate the personal from the political. McCullough's exhaustive research makes the romantic entanglements feel like a vital part of the historical engine. The epic scale is, well, the rise and fall of the Roman Republic, viewed through the intimate lives of those who shaped it.
I find the 'major historical event' requirement interesting. For some, a world war is major. For others, the daily reality of systemic racism or sexism in a specific era is the major event. 'The Mayor of Maxwell Street' tackles the latter. The 'event' is the entire oppressive structure of 1920s America. The romance is a direct challenge to that structure. In that sense, it might be one of the most successfully blended novels on this list, because the love story cannot be extricated from the history; it is a political act. That gives it a power that a romance set during a more passive backdrop might lack.
