The concept of 'land' and digital real estate is a recurring theme. It's not just about owning a cool house, but about controlling the code that defines a popular gathering space. Social power becomes tied to being a 'node owner' or a 'space architect.' The politics revolve around zoning, expansion, and territory disputes in a literally malleable environment.

Nostalgia is a powerful force in the ones I've read. Not nostalgia for the real world, but for earlier, 'purer' versions of the VR world itself. You get factions of 'classic' players who refuse to update their clients or who try to preserve old code like a historic landmark. It's a direct commentary on how we romanticize early internet culture now.

Lol, imagine the in-VR equivalent of a homeowners association. That's basically the plot of a book I read last month. Endless bureaucratic drama about avatar height regulations, approved building textures, and noise complaints about spell effects. It was a hilarious and painfully accurate satire of how humans can't help but create petty rules everywhere.

How do modern sci fi books portray virtual reality and digital worlds?

I like when the story questions the premise of 'reality' altogether. If you're born in a VR, raised in it, and all your experiences are within it, is it not your reality? The characters who come from outside to 'liberate' you are, from your perspective, invaders from a mythic, inferior plane of existence. This reversal of perspective is brilliant. It forces the reader to confront their own bias that the physical world is inherently more 'real.' It's a mind-bender that decenters the human experience in a refreshing way.

Which fantasy sci fi novels focus on virtual reality worldbuilding?

I keep hoping for a novel that does for VR what 'Piranesi' did for a mysterious house. A story completely immersed in exploring and cataloging a beautiful, bizarre, and lonely virtual world for its own sake, with a slow-burn mystery about why it exists. Most VR stories are about escaping it, conquering it, or revealing it as a trap. I want one that treats the VR world as a place of genuine wonder and discovery, where the protagonist's goal is simply to understand its architecture and history. That's my niche desire for worldbuilding.
