Can NPCs Mine Madness Ore Skyrim In Vanilla Skyrim?

This question scratches that little gameplay itch I always have — short version: no, NPCs in vanilla 'Skyrim' will not go around mining ore veins (including any mod- or fan-named stuff like 'madness ore') in the way players do. The game world is built so ore veins are activatable objects that the player interacts with; NPCs may stand near a vein with a pickaxe and even play mining animations, but those are atmospheric details rather than functional harvesting. In plain vanilla 'Skyrim' the actual act of getting ore from a vein is something the player triggers, and NPC activity won’t deplete or produce ore for you to find later.

You’ll see miners and blacksmiths hanging out in mines and camps — they add great flavor and sometimes play pickaxe-swinging animations — but that doesn’t mean the engine treats them as miners in the same inventory-changing way it treats the player. NPCs can carry ore or ingots because those items can appear on leveled lists, merchant stocks, or as quest script rewards, but that’s different from them actively mining a vein. Some quest-specific scripts might move ore around (an NPC might hand you something or a quest might spawn ores as part of an event), but those are scripted exceptions, not a general NPC mining system. If you’re strictly on a vanilla playthrough, though, you’ll be the one doing the mining — which I kind of enjoy, honestly; there’s something satisfying about avoiding the fast travel and stopping at a vein to gather supplies. Feels more like roleplay when you swing your pickaxe yourself, even if a few imaginary miners are working in the background.
