Library apps are the official free channel. Full stop. OverDrive, Libby, Hoopla—these are partners with publishers. They pay for licenses that libraries then offer to you. So, while there's no 'Stephen King Free Reading App,' your library's app functionally is that for thousands of books, 'IT' included if your library has it. The experience is seamless, and it's guilt-free. Sometimes there's a waitlist, but that's the trade-off. This is the answer I give everyone asking about free legal reading for any major commercial novel.

I read it on my Kobo. Downloaded a sample from the Kobo store for free, which gave me the first few chapters. Loved it, so I bought it. The sample function is a great way to try before you buy across all major ebook platforms. That's the intended 'free taste.' The full book, though, is a purchase. It's how authors eat. King might be rich, but the principle is the same for every writer. Valuing the work means paying for it or using the sanctioned library loan system.

Scribd feels free if you have a subscription through a promo or bundle. It's a Netflix-for-books model. 'IT' is often available there. But again, it's a paid subscription service, not a free app. They have a free trial, though, so you could technically read it for free within that trial period if you cancel. That's probably the closest loophole to a 'free official app' experience, though Scribd isn't the publisher's app—it's a third-party subscription service with licensing deals.

If we're talking purely about reading text on a screen, consider Kindle Unlimited. It's not free, but it's a subscription. 'IT' isn't always in the catalog, but sometimes it pops in and out. Still, that's a paid service. The concept of 'free' in publishing is almost exclusively tied to libraries. Any other free full-text offering for a current bestseller, even an older one like 'IT,' would be a breach of copyright. The author and publisher's legal teams are very active in protecting these rights. So, officially? No. Unofficially? You'll find shady sites, but I wouldn't risk it.

Elliot Carter never loses.
Not to his father.
Not to anyone.
And definitely not to the infuriating 'golden' boy who suddenly moves into his house.
When Elliot’s father marries Asher Brooks’ mother, his already broken world cracks even more. Asher is everything he despises—calm, disciplined, admired by everyone at university. The kind of guy who smiles like he has nothing to prove.
From the moment they meet, it’s war.
Elliot thrives on pushing buttons. Asher refuses to be provoked. Their fights are sharp, personal, and relentless, until one night, anger turns physical… and something far more dangerous ignites between them.
A line is crossed that neither of them can uncross.
Asher refuses to feel guilty.
Elliot refuses to admit he wanted it.
Now they’re trapped under the same roof, and the more they try to hate each other, the more dangerous the attraction becomes.
Because this isn’t just rivalry.
It’s obsession.
And when control becomes the weapon of choice, someone is bound to break.
The only question is... Who will break first?
My father has chosen me to succeed him in the family business.
But if I want the job, it comes with stipulations. And one of those stipulations is to never mix business with pleasure. AKA, don't sleep with anyone on the job. My father leads by example, and not once have I ever seen him get involved with anyone, not even his beautiful assistant. That was an easy rule to follow...until Axel.
Axel is an expert distributor, someone who knows how to get our product past the ruthless regulations mandated by the government. My father has never had a partner, but he makes an exception for Axel because he's good at what he does.
But the second our eyes meet...there's fire. He's by far the most handsome man I've ever seen, and his I couldn't care less attitude makes me weak. But I put up boundaries and reject his advances.
But this man doesn't stop until he gets what he wants.
One night together becomes the precursor to the most passionate affair of my life. If my father discovers our secret, it'll cost me my career...and it'll cost Axel his life. To make matters worse, I'm falling for this man...and I think he's falling for me too.
Michael spent five years dealing with his disorder: haphephobia. Afraid to be touch. Afraid of stepping out of his home to enjoy a normal life. After moving to a new school, Michael has to challenge himself again from the beginning, but now with help from his new friend Elliot.
Update: Monday
Disclaimer: trigger warning. The novel goes through disorders that can be triggering and sensitive for viewers.
A teenager Daniel, life comes falling apart. Everything changes when he meets a mystery girl, a princess. She accidentally leads him to a book with powers that make your wishes come true but Daniel doesn’t understand the price. Now everything he has is at stake including his life.
Daniel, an intelligent but shy boy loses his crush to his best friend. His parents are on the verge of a divorce and not even his friend Glenn can help. When fate leads him to a strange pretty girl, he discovers a book that grants wishes but everything changes when competition arises for the book.
The mystery Princess, who becomes his good friend and her evil Uncle both want the book. With awareness of the situation, He is forced to lie to all his friends and love ones.
With all his ties at risk, what does Daniel do when he finds out the cost of his wishes coming true is his life.
"I bet you can't make her like you."
"Watch me."
Neither of them knew the other one was having that exact same conversation.
Ava Bennett has never lost anything worth keeping. Not competitions, not arguments, and certainly not the cheer captain election she has spent three years bleeding for. She is disciplined, intimidating, and completely immune to Mason Reed's charm. Or so she tells herself.
Mason Reed has never met a girl he couldn't win over. Football captain, school golden boy, wanted by everyone and challenged by no one. Until Ava Bennett looks straight through him like he is nothing, and suddenly winning becomes personal.
When their friends separately dare them to do the impossible, both accept. Neither knows the other made the same bet. So when Mason proposes a fake relationship, the terms are coldly practical. His playboy reputation is costing him his shot at the Elite Prospects Football Program, the most prestigious talent pipeline in the state. Ava needs the popularity surge to pull ahead in the captain election. They hate each other. They agree anyway.
The rules are simple. No feelings. No jealousy. No catching feelings.
They break every single one.
But secrets this size never stay buried, and when the truth finally surfaces, it doesn't just destroy what they built. It forces them to confront the one question neither of them is brave enough to answer.
If it started as a lie, how do you know when it became real?
So......
Fake It With Me, Because the most dangerous game is the one where you forget you're playing.
I love how many publishers actually offer legit ways to read their works without paying a dime. Project Gutenberg is my go-to—they’ve got thousands of classics like 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Frankenstein' completely free because their copyrights expired. Then there’s Open Library, which lets you borrow modern books just like a real library, and publishers like Tor sometimes give away free eBooks to promote new releases. Baen Books also has a free library full of sci-fi gems. It’s awesome how these publishers make reading accessible to everyone, especially if you’re on a tight budget or just love discovering new books hassle-free.
As an avid reader who scours the internet for free reads, I’ve stumbled upon several publishers that generously offer books online. Project Gutenberg is a treasure trove with over 60,000 free eBooks, mostly classics whose copyrights have expired. They’ve digitized everything from 'Pride and Prejudice' to 'Frankenstein,' making it a haven for literature lovers.
Another fantastic resource is Open Library, which operates like a digital public library. They lend out modern titles alongside classics, and their collection is vast. I’ve found everything from obscure 19th-century poetry to contemporary indie novels there. For those into academic or niche non-fiction, Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) is a goldmine, offering peer-reviewed scholarly works free of charge.
Lastly, Baen Books provides a selection of free sci-fi and fantasy novels, perfect for genre enthusiasts. Their free library includes works by authors like David Weber and Lois McMaster Bujold. These publishers are lifesavers for bookworms on a budget or anyone craving a no-cost literary adventure.
