A friend mentioned NYT bestsellers refresh weekly, but is that schedule the same for print books, e-books, and combined lists during holidays?

I am kind of interested to know how often this list is updated because then I would have a way to prove to people in online arguments that a certain book was popular. For example, I could say something like “Well, it was on the list for fifteen consecutive weeks!” and then say “According to this site which updates this list every week…”. Knowing that it is a weekly list means that 15 weeks means something.

But for most people, this information is mere abstract knowledge, ready to spring into action for trivia night, for pedantic debates about books. The rest of the time, it remains mere knowledge about daily reading, not actually necessary to know.

To be included in the lists of current bestsellers, books have to meet criteria based on the period during which they were on sale, a period determined by the weekly frequency of the lists’ publication. The consistency of our weekly updates is somewhat reassuring. The stock market may plummet, fads come and go in a flash, but the New York Times Best Sellers list will be completed and published on the following Wednesday. Same as it ever was.

This ritual reflects an agreement to care about what people are reading and to measure that in order to report on it. The weekly update is the ritual that sustains this long-standing tradition. In today’s media landscape so fragmented that it is difficult to keep track of what is going on, such rituals are rare and wonderfully bureaucratic.

While the weekly list update is spiffy, the method that corporate marketing departments use to stoke a list to #1 (very temporarily) by purchasing in bulk or having a one-day sale is rather tawdry and obvious. Are these books really experiencing a surge in organic demand from readers?

But of course, I look to see if my favorite authors have risen on the list, and might remark on that in a Twitter update somewhere. But really, the bestsellerlist has nothing to do with my choices here, since my tbr list is already almost too much for me to handle without adding to it every week all the new bestsellers.

The list is updated on a weekly basis, making it relevant as current news. If updated on a monthly basis, the list would essentially become a summary of current bestsellers rather than an event in itself. Such is the ‘churn’ of weekly bestsellers, that it creates current news headlines such as ‘X Knocks Y Off Top Of Bestseller List’ and so on. The current news created by the weekly bestseller list is of benefit to the Times, and the publishers too.

This way books are turned into a sport with weekly standings which makes for good literature or not, but is very effective from the perspective of a media outlet or publisher.

It's a weekly list, but just to note, the list on the New York Times web site can differ rather significantly from the Indie Bestseller list, in part because the NYT list draws from a larger pool of retailers on line as well as in stores, whereas the Indie list covers only sales at independent stores.

Of course a book can go up and down the lists from week to week, but tell quite different stories about what’s selling in the meantime. The term ‘bestseller’ has different connotations depending on who’s measuring it and where.

I recently had to Google this because my book club and I got into a huge argument over how often the longlist is updated. We were all pretty sure it was monthly, but no, that’s not it. Daily? No. Weekly, first online, then in print. Kind of underwhelming after the hour or so we spent arguing over it.

Most of the book club discussion on the matter of the list was spent debating the politics of the list rather than the true schedule of the list’s updates. That’s where the real rabbit hole is.

I just noticed that the framing of the question presumes that we are referring to a single list of books rather than a collection of lists. “The books New York Times best sellers list” is kind of a joke. In reality, there are many lists of best sellers and they are multiplying. But yes, they are all updated on a weekly cycle and are a vain attempt to organize the unorganizable. And then try to determine what people are actually reading and loving.
