A practical tip: Check if your library has them all in ebook or audio. That might dictate your order more than any ideal plan. If they only have 'Red Country' available now, read it. Don't put off starting because you're waiting for the 'perfect' sequence. The perfect sequence is the one where you're reading Joe Abercrombie.

Someone in the comments will inevitably say 'Just read them in whatever order you want!' while secretly judging you if you don't pick their preferred order. Ignore them. Read the books. Form your own opinions. The community is great, but we can be pedantic. The stories are what matter.

If you're an audiobook listener, this is one series you must experience. Steven Pacey is a god. And listening in order is crucial because he creates distinct voices for hundreds of characters. Hearing a voice from three books ago pop up again is a visceral thrill.

So, publication order, in audio. That's the ultimate recommendation. It's a commitment of hundreds of hours, but it's the best way to consume this particular universe. The performance adds a layer of character depth that text alone can't match.

The correct order is whatever gets you reading them. I tried starting with the trilogy twice and put it down. Then I picked up 'Red Country' because I love westerns, and it blew me away. I immediately devoured everything else in publication order, and the trilogy finally clicked because I was already invested in the world.

So if publication order isn't working, jump to a standalone that matches your favorite genre. These books are tougher than your average fantasy—morally grey, light on traditional heroism. Sometimes you need a different door into the house.

For a visual learner: 1) The First Law Trilogy. 2) 'Best Served Cold.' 3) 'The Heroes.' 4) 'Red Country.' 5) 'Sharp Ends.' 6) The Age of Madness Trilogy. Draw a line under step 5 if you want a break. That's it. Print it out and stick it on your fridge.

Any other order is for re-reads or specialists. First time through, this is the map. Don't let the internet complicate a simple, wonderful path through some of the best fiction out there.

Where should I start reading Joe Abercrombie’s books?

Think of it like a TV series. Season 1 is the First Law trilogy. Then you have three brilliant, darker, more focused TV movies (the standalones). Then Season 2 is the Age of Madness trilogy. You wouldn't skip to the TV movies or Season 2, right? You'd miss too much character history and world-building. The same principle applies. Each part is great, but the whole is greater.

Which Joe Abercrombie book is the best starting point for newcomers?

I see a lot of debate, but what's the worst that can happen? Pick up 'The Blade Itself.' If you're not feeling it after 150 pages, maybe Abercrombie isn't for you, and that's okay. Not every author is for everyone. His particular blend of grimdark and dark humor is a specific taste. Starting with the 'most accessible' book might get you to finish one, but if you don't like the core style present in the first book, you probably won't like the others much either. Use it as a litmus test.

Which Joe Abercrombie book should I read after finishing The First Law?

My two cents: Read 'Sharp Ends' last, after the standalones and before Age of Madness. It acts as a perfect recap and refresher of the world and its characters, told through these vibrant little vignettes. It gets you back in the mindset and reminds you of everyone's histories before launching into the new era. It's the perfect bridge between the two major eras of the Circle of the World.

How do Joe Abercrombie’s First Law books connect in order?

3 Réponses2026-07-17 09:55:02
I love how the connections aren't always plot-based. It's the themes that link them. The cyclical nature of violence, the futility of heroism, the corruption of power—each book examines these from a different angle. Reading them in order lets you see Abercrombie refining and deepening these ideas. The cynical tone of 'Last Argument of Kings' evolves into something even more complex and despairing by 'The Wisdom of Crowds'.
