In What Order Should I Read The King And Maxwell Novels?

Reading David Baldacci's King & Maxwell books and a bit lost about where to begin after the series order gets reshuffled. Do the prequels fit in best at the start or later?

Can we talk about how the TV adaptation cast was actually pretty great? Rebecca Romijn and Jon Tenney had good chemistry. Too bad it only lasted one season. Anyway, for the books, the order is set. Don't let the TV show's different timeline confuse you. The books are their own, better, more detailed universe.

I'm just sitting here nodding along. Everyone's got it right. Publication order. Don't complicate it. The books are numbered in order on some editions, too. Sometimes it's printed inside. If you're buying used, just check the copyright page for the year and line them up that way. It's a satisfying, complete series with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

The series order is simple: 'Split Second' (2003), 'Hour Game' (2004), 'Third Degree' (2008), 'First Family' (2009), 'The Sixth Man' (2011), 'King and Maxwell' (2013), and 'End Game' (2017). Baldacci writes in a way that each book has a self-contained mystery, so technically you could pick up any and not be totally lost. But the character arcs, especially the evolving partnership and personal backstory between Sean and Michelle, build over time. Reading out of order would rob you of those little payoffs.

I think the order's been covered, but I'll add a nuance: 'Split Second' and 'Hour Game' feel like a tighter duo, almost a two-part introduction. Then 'Third Degree' shifts the tone a bit into more personal drama. The series evolves, so if you love the first one, you'll likely enjoy the ride. If you find the first one just okay, maybe skip to 'First Family', which has a fantastic D.C. conspiracy plot that showcases their skills brilliantly.

Hmm. I see the consensus is publication order, and I agree. But I'll play devil's advocate: if you're short on time and want just the absolute best, I'd say read 'Hour Game' and 'First Family'. They're the peak of the series, in my opinion. Then, if you love those, go back to 'Split Second' and continue in order. But purists will (rightfully) yell at me for that. The character journey is better in order.

How do I read the King and Maxwell novels in order?

The series order is clearly listed on David Baldacci's official Facebook page in the 'Books' section. It's Split Second, Hour Game, Simple Genius, First Family, The Sixth Man, King and Maxwell, End Game. He sometimes does Q&As there, and that's the order he's confirmed when asked. The man knows his own series. So if you want the definitive answer from the source, that's it. No need to overcomplicate it with timeline analyses or fan theories. Just follow the list and enjoy the ride.

The series order is straightforward: 1. Split Second (2003), 2. Hour Game (2004), 3. Simple Genius (2007), 4. First Family (2009), 5. The Sixth Man (2011), 6. King and Maxwell (2013). Any list that deviates from this is either including crossovers or is just wrong.

The series kind of fizzles out after 'The Sixth Man', in my opinion. 'King and Maxwell' (the last book) felt like a reunion tour rather than a fresh story. So if you're pressed for time, the first four are the essential peak. The order still matters to get there, though.

The only deviation I'd ever suggest is if someone really struggles with the first book's pacing. Maybe, maybe try 'Hour Game'. But you'll still miss crucial setup. Really, just power through 'Split Second'. It's worth it.

Does the King and Maxwell reading order match the publication order?

The order's the same. I'd only caution that the writing style shifts a bit after the first two. The later books feel more like Baldacci's standalone political thrillers, with King and Maxwell inserted. Reading in order lets you track that evolution, for better or worse. It's part of the series' history.

What is the correct King and Maxwell series order to read?

A bookseller told me the most common mistake is people buying 'King and Maxwell' (the sixth book) thinking it's a collection or the first book because of the title. We had to put a little note on the shelf. So, publishers, maybe don't name a later book after the series! It causes confusion. But for readers, just remember: the series-named book is not the first. 'Split Second' is the true entry point. Spread the word.

Check used bookstores or online marketplaces for lots. You can often find the first three or four books sold together for cheap. That's a clear economic signal to start at the beginning and read in order! It's the universe telling you what to do.

How do you read the King & Maxwell books in chronological order?

5 Answers2026-07-26 00:02:38
Honestly, I read 'The Target' first because it was on sale, and I didn't feel lost at all. These aren't super serialized like some fantasy series. You can pick up almost any book and get a complete story. The chronological order is more for purists who want to trace every single character beat. For everyone else, grab whatever's available at the library and dive in. The core appeal is the banter and the action, not a meticulously plotted overarching saga.
