His female characters are… not the focus. Just saying. If that’s something you care about, temper your expectations across the board. The stories are largely about men in rooms making decisions. 'Pompeii' has a decent female character, but she’s still peripheral. 'Conclave' has zero, for obvious reasons. It’s a factor that might influence which book you’re in the mood for. Sometimes I’m fine with it; other times I need a break and read something else.
Just read them in publication order. You’ll see how his writing evolved from the ancient Rome fascination into those WWII-era thrillers. 'Fatherland' came out first, and it’s a classic for a reason—it shows his signature 'what if' style right from the start. Following the release dates means you won’t miss any subtle references or improvements in his craft.
He revisited Rome later with the Cicero books, and having read his earlier works, you can spot how his political insight deepened. Publication order is rarely a bad way to go with any author, honestly. It feels like taking the journey alongside the writer.
The great thing about Harris is that you can literally judge the books by their covers—the setting on the cover is the vibe inside. A volcano? That’s 'Pompeii'. A Roman bust? Cicero trilogy. A swastika? That’s the WWII cluster. Pick the cover that pulls you in the most and start there.
His writing is so accessible and propulsive that any entry point works, barring the trilogy sequence. I started with 'Archangel' because I was into post-Soviet chaos, and it hooked me immediately. There’s no wrong door into his bibliography, just different atmospheric preferences.
What’s the one with the creepy AI hedge fund? 'The Fear Index'. That’s the outlier. It’s like Harris decided to write a Michael Crichton novel. It’s fun! But it feels disconnected from his other work. Treat it as a standalone palate cleanser after a couple of heavy historical novels. It’s a quick, techy thriller that shows he can do more than just history.
Has anyone else noticed how his later books, like 'Munich', feel much pacier than the dense political maneuvering in 'Imperium'? I wonder if that’s him adapting to modern thriller expectations or just honing his skill. Not really an answer to the order question, just a thought that popped up while skimming this thread.

A/N
This was my First Trilogy and might have some Grammar issues. I will re-edit when I can.
Okay, real talk from someone who tried the historical timeline order: it's a headache. You're constantly looking up dates, and the jumps in writing style can be jarring. Publication order is the path of least resistance. It's the order in which he, the author, intended the public to experience his work. There's a logic to it, even if it's not the logic of history itself.
I read them based on setting. I was in a Roman history phase, so I plowed through 'Pompeii' and the Cicero trilogy. Then I got into WWII histories, so I read 'Enigma', 'Munich', and 'V2'.
Grouping them like that let me stay in a single historical 'headspace' and really appreciate the nuances Harris added to periods I was already reading about. The novels felt like vivid, dramatized companions to the dry history books. The impact was in the enrichment of my understanding of those eras, not just in the plots of the novels themselves.
