Just wondering – has anyone ever read ratings that seemed to be completely wrong? I’m not suggesting some sort of conspiracy, just an occasional human error on the part of a rating board, perhaps applying outdated criteria on the odd occasion. That must account for some of the more extreme outliers.

The representation of disability and of chronic pain is complex and often problematic in the comics. Jamie is shown to suffer from the long-term effects of his injuries: chronic back pain, lameness and hand damage. But in order to achieve heroic feats of strength he is again and again shown to suffer terrible pain and to overcome it. Such representations of disability can be particularly problematic for people with disabilities and with chronic pain, because they present a realistic representation of the lasting effects of physical injuries, but at the same time they can be part of an ‘overcoming’-narrative that is not very realistic and that can be even pressuring for readers with disabilities and with chronic pain.

The locations now also serve as a sort of time capsule to Aspirational ‘90s settings. Napa today is still a very beautiful place but the film’s Napa location is ‘rustic chic’ and the San Francisco location of the Victorian home of Giles is ‘impeccably decorated in a style so very popular in the ‘90s.’ The camp is equally as ‘cool’ and also shoot in a ‘family goes on a big adventure and have fun’ style of so many other ‘family friendly’ movies of the era.
Thus the filming locations for these scenes have also been fixated at a particular time in history – in this case that of the late 1990s. When one visits the locations today they will probably notice differences – for example the new interior of the Ahwahnee at Yosemite, or the changes in the vineyard plantings at the various wineries. But in the film these locations have been fixated in time as they were at the turn of the century. Thus the ‘where’ of the film is also a ‘when’, and a visit to these wonderful locations today will provide a contrast to how they were when the story was being shot for the film some 15 years or so ago.

It’s roughly two-thirds of the way through their initial clandestine year. That she goes to school, has family dinner, and hides this massive secret from her life for so long makes the ‘when’ of it all all the more chilling. When her secret can no longer be hidden from the facade of normalcy that she has created, it all comes crashing down around her. Her confession is a symptom of systemic failure in her life, and the parents’ harsh new rules are the system rebooting.

Formality is highlighted when the old language is read out loud with attention to the formal structure of the sentences and to the old words used. While silently reading the old language is easily modernized by the reader, reading it out loud with attention to cadence highlights the old formal language of the period.
On the other hand, the historical atmosphere of the time is also very evident. The contrast between Claire’s modern internal monologue and the historical dialogue is very sharp and it makes the constant clash between her two worlds very palpable. Often the sci-fi element of the story is not very evident on the page, but here it is very strong.

Just contemplating the list of Disney and Pixar movies, the parents are mostly deceased, absent or absolute perfection. The few strict parents are merely verbally strict, eg Marlin from Finding Nemo is overly protective. If there were ever to be a comic physical contact such as in a Goofy cartoon, it would be completely purged from mainstream children’s animation today as it is too scary, too real for children to watch and generally contrasts with the ideal modern parent. All conflicts and mistakes in the movies stem from misunderstandings, external villains or the child’s very own mistakes – and not from the children being physically punished by their parents.

In live-action television aimed at children and teens post-2000, this trope almost entirely disappears. Shows on Disney Channel, as well as many Nickelodeon sitcoms, feature children who are grounded or told a point and then jump right back to their normal activities. The worst behavior a child displays is possibly to argue with a parent, and even then the parent is typically either goofy or strict. Physical punishment, even in comedic situations, is never shown to be administered to child characters.
Rather, the new fictional world of discipline is spoken, and based on privilege. Is this more realistic for today’s families? Perhaps. The scripted new world of conflict between parents and children is further sanitized, and therefore less charged, than in the past. Rather than struggling over basic human needs, today’s teens have their parents to contend with over WiFi access and the right to use the car.

I notice that when Outlander uses the phrase ‘Blood of My Blood’ it’s signaling more than just a scene of the same name. The real heart of the phrase is family, heritage and all the obligations that you have to fulfill because of the blood that runs through your veins. It can signify shock of unexpected paternity, or the quiet ways that people can inherit traits, obligations and even wounds from their ancestors.
The term “blood of my blood” refers to Scottish clan identity and later the families that transplanted to the New World and were tied together by their ancestral ties of protect, trust and sacrifice. Typically episodes classified under this banner consist of close-up, personal and emotional scenes of births, deaths and confessions which illustrate how personal decisions can have far-reaching consequences for generations of a family. The episodes under this banner are some of my favorite as they develop the intimate drama of a character or group of characters within the broad and sweeping historical drama of the story.
