What is the official stance of Shueisha (or other companies) towards fan-created comics? I assume they are legal under fair use when used as parody or commentary, but the line gets blurred when a fan writes a completely alternate story. Most fan-created comics are non-commercial, which would likely be the reason they are left alone by big companies. They are extremely fascinating, but also sort of anxiety-provoking to me. I really like ‘I See You’ but I fear that one day a company may send a cease-and-desist and the comic will be taken off of the internet. So, I silently download all of the pages to my computer in case.

Webtoon. I wrote that title so you’d read this piece about the act of reading Webtoon comics. Yes, the vertical scroll is perfect for building to suspense and comedic moments. An artist can use the length of the scroll to control the pacing of a scene. For example, a reaction panel can be placed just off the bottom of the screen so that the reader has to scroll down to see the character’s expression in that moment. If a comic were online and all the panels for a page were displayed all at once or the comic was read horizontally page by page click by click then the comedic moments would not be timed as well. I also really enjoy their origin story. It is Kirishima who chose Bakugo to be his friend after the battle trial. What he saw in Bakugo was his focus towards his training to become a hero that was almost terrifying. He made the effort to reach out to him after that, and despite seeing him at his worst (screaming, demanding, etc.), he knew that he wanted to be that person’s friend. It was an active choice, not to let things happen by chance, to drift apart. The relationship is so real, it must be wonderful to have such a relationship, either romantic or not. Vol. 9 of ‘My Senpai is Annoying’ finally ends the long wait for a slow-burning relationship between Sakurai and her senpai Kazama. The buildup of tons of teasing and almost but not quite moments is all finally put to rest in this lovely volume, where Kazama confesses his love in his typical ‘him’ fashion, of course. And of course Sakurai blushes and gets flustered in front of half the office, but it’s also adorable to see her try and play it cool while at the same time getting embarrassed and delighted at the same time.

A lot of emotion can be packed into a light story, and Kumorin does a great job of keeping things where they are while still packing in some serious feelings. My favorite panel is Sakurai’s small smile of happiness for herself in the midst of chaos. This is the heart of Senpai, and it’s wonderful to read.

For this comic, I consider Lezhin to be the official host of the fandom, mostly because the comic is posted on Lezhin first, and thus most of the comic’s fan discussions take place in the comments on each chapter on Lezhin, as well as on subreddits/Discord servers dedicated to the comic. If you’re reading the comic officially, you get to read it at the same pace as everyone else, which is great for participating in weekly sessions of guessing and Speculation about upcoming storylines. Oh oh ‘Killing Stalking’… I read that one a while ago on Lezhin and it completely twisted me around in every way. The tension between the two leads is just incredible and the art is fantastic and perfectly captures the eerie atmosphere of the whole thing. For those interested in reading it legally, I know Lezhin and Tappytoon have it.

Please don’t read this on some of the ‘other’ websites that come up in your search as they can contain malware. I’ve listed a couple of other alternatives that are just as good at the bottom of this post. Warehouse and The Pawn’s Revenge are two other alternatives that are just as good at causing you sleepless nights. Just make sure you read something light and fluffy afterwards though!

I’ve been reading a web novel called ‘Fated to Love You’ by which this manga could be based. It’s a story about a contract marriage that was originally supposed to be for one night due to a mistaken one-night stand. The real fun in the story comes from how the two protagonists’ lives continue to get entangled through a series of random encounters and all the meddling of their families. The sense of the two people being forced by fate into dealing with each other time and again is relentless and almost comedic, given how different they are.

So Deku's original thing was his brain. His Quirk analysis notebooks from the story are pretty legendary. If we were reading a different story than MHA, his superhuman analysis and tactical planning abilities would probably be his superpower. He developed that skill through his passion for Quirks and his need for it. As a result, he is an extremely effective hero later on because he is able to out-think individuals with powerful Quirks. So even though Deku was never a naturally born super, he has developed a sort of ‘meta-Quirk’ through his intellect.

I read that All Might's real name is Toshinori Yagi. It's a nice name and it suits him well, as opposed to his heroic name which is very flashy. Incidentally, the series uses All Might's real name very sparingly, just like the series uses to privilege to show All Might's real name to the people closest to him. Hence we get to see Toshinori in the form of Midoriya, Aizawa and a few others.

This detail shows again how the burden of being a symbol affects All Might. It’s a small detail but it reveals so much about the character. The way he switches between his identity as a hero and his real name, Toshinori, brings so much vulnerability to every situation. This is why I find his name so meaningful, it reminds us that beneath the costume of a hero is a human being.
