After 20 chapters or so I got bored with Manhwa. At the start the concept of having these ‘monster tenants’ living with humans was cool and I got sucked into the Manhwa straight away. But it’s just been this long string of episodic chapters each one presenting a new problem that is then solved within the chapter, and little or no consequence falling on the characters within the story. It gets pretty tiring after a while. I expect more from my Manhwa than what I’m reading here, tons of Manhwa has just as much, if not more urban fantasy and/or comedy elements. This Manhwa has some ok art but nothing that will have you stop and gaze in wonder at it after a few pages. Perhaps later in the story it develops more into a serialized story, but for now I’m just not interested anymore. If you’re some sort of hardcore fan of Manhwa than I suggest you read it, but for people with limited time to read it there are far better titles to the urban fantasy and/or comedy genres.

I thought for a second that The Owner of a Building was going to be a really slow plot of some high-stakes real-estate deal. But actually, the only actual tenants are ghosts and various monsters, and the story is made up of these very short individual stories of various ridiculous circumstances that befall the poor landlord. He deals with them all in his typical matter-of-fact, ‘this is just another one of them’ sort of way, and that alone is quite fun to read about.

For a moment, I was going to recommend this because the way that this story shows urban fantasy concepts in manhwa is so great and low-key and all. It’s a really nice slice-of-life read with dry and offhand humor, sometimes transcending even into slapstick humor. Each chapter is largely a standalone encounter or storyline, though they build on one another in some ways, so just look at it as a weird and offhand read.

It meanders a bit and there’s no great overarching plot to speak of. It’s something you can read every so often in between more intense reads. So long as you’re not expecting some super powered up hero or massive amounts of in-depth world building then this should suffice nicely. The specific brand of humor and supnatural rental agreements work pretty well for what they are.

I think of this as more of a story than a main plot. A mystery that unfolds throughout this slice-of-life type of story. Kang Younghyun does a great job in creating this weird building and then giving us a series of anthology-like chapters where we get to see the different tenants and their stories – a ghost looking to clear up some unfinished business, a goblin running a black market in the building, a human family living next door completely unaware of their strange neighbors. The plot basically follows Younghyun as he tries to piece together the different stories to determine the purpose of the building. His trying to maintain the delicate truce is full of tension, and it appears his past is connected to the building in some way that he’s only just beginning to realize. The artwork is detailed and gritty making every cracked wall and dark shadow feel important.

Unorganized as it is, this is how I do things. My bookmark page has over 15 different manhwa sites all neatly organized in folders. When searching for a specific series I normally open 3-4 of the sites in different tabs and compare the following: image quality, ad size (with ad blocker enabled of course), and how user friendly the site is to read. It adds about a minute to finding a series but 9 times out of 10 I’ll find a better version of the manhwa than what I would have found by clicking the first result in a Google search. I do this because it is basically digital window shopping for the best way to read a series. The “best” site to read a series can change from series to series, and even within a series from chapter to chapter, depending on how up to date the best mirror is.

Also, discussions in the community help me distinguish between a bad translation and a bad site. It turns reading manga into a social experience instead of just searching for sites.
